What separates the best Wi-Fi routers on this page?

Two things do most of the work: the far-bedroom number and whether the features you want sit behind a subscription. The Deco BE63 scored 9 and hit 612 Mbps in the far bedroom, 180 Mbps clear of the next mesh kit, with three 2.5 Gbps ports on every node and no subscription for the features that matter. The RT-BE88U scored 8.6 at $299, with ten wired ports including a 10 Gbps and a 2.5 Gbps, and AiProtection free for the life of the router. It managed 421 Mbps at distance, because a single unit cannot beat mesh at distance.

Price does not track score here. The Archer AX55 scored 8 at $79 and saturated a gigabit line in the same room, but dropped to 268 Mbps in the far bedroom. The Orbi 770 Series scored 7.9 at $699, with a dedicated backhaul band that held 574 Mbps at distance from two units. The eero Pro 7 scored 8.2 at $549 for two nodes, set up in six minutes, and needs eero Plus at $9.99 a month for parental controls and network security. The Nest Wifi Pro scored 8.2 at $299 with no subscription anywhere, but 409 Mbps at distance and one gigabit LAN port per node.

What should you check before buying a Wi-Fi router?

Scoring weights throughput and range at 30, reliability under load at 20, features and control at 20, setup and app at 15, and value at 15. Match those to your home.

Distance: if the far room matters, mesh wins. The Deco BE63 held 580 Mbps with thirty devices and four 4K streams running.
Wired devices: count them. The RT-BE88U has ten LAN ports; the Nest Wifi Pro has one gigabit LAN port per node.
Subscriptions: HomeShield Pro upsells security features on the Deco BE63, Netgear Armor is a subscription after the trial on the Orbi 770 Series, and eero Plus costs $9.99 a month.
Setup patience: the eero Pro 7 took six minutes; the RT-BE88U settings menu will overwhelm anyone who does not want it.

Small flat, tight budget

The Archer AX55 at $79 is perfectly adequate through a one or two-bedroom flat, with free basic parental controls and QoS. It runs out in a house.

Large house, wired gear, no subscriptions

The Deco BE63 covers the far bedroom and gives every node three 2.5 Gbps ports for wired backhaul. The RT-BE88U suits the person who wants ten ports and a settings menu to configure.

Smart home and easy setup

The Nest Wifi Pro has a Thread border router and Matter support in each node, with no subscription. The eero Pro 7 adds Zigbee and Thread and the fastest setup here, if you accept eero Plus.

Big house, two nodes only

The Orbi 770 Series covered what took three nodes from most kits, at $699.

For a flat on a budget, the Archer AX55 at $79 does the job. For a large house with wired devices and no subscription, the Deco BE63 is the pick, while the RT-BE88U suits anyone who wants ten ports and a deep settings menu. If smart-home kit and quick setup matter more, look at the Nest Wifi Pro or the eero Pro 7.

Questions about best wi-fi routers of 2027

Do I need Wi-Fi 7?

Only if you own devices that speak it, which today means a recent flagship phone or laptop. Wi-Fi 7 routers do handle congestion better even with older clients, so they are a reasonable buy if you are replacing a router you will keep five years. Paying a premium for Wi-Fi 7 to serve a house full of Wi-Fi 5 devices changes nothing you will notice.

Mesh or a single router?

Under about 1,500 sq ft on one floor, a good single router beats a cheap mesh, because every mesh hop costs bandwidth. Over that, or across floors or through brick, mesh wins clearly: our far-bedroom measurement roughly doubled when we moved from a single unit to a two-node kit in the same house.

Why does my new router need a subscription?

Several makers now put parental controls, network security and even some device management behind a monthly fee. Eero Plus, Netgear Armor and TP-Link HomeShield Pro all work this way. We scored that against them, and marked which routers give you the core features outright.

How do you test routers?

Each router replaces the last in the same 2,200 sq ft, two-storey house on the same 1 Gbps connection, with the same laptop as the client. We measure in four fixed positions — same room, one floor up, far bedroom, garage — three runs each, then repeat with thirty devices connected and four 4K streams plus a large upload running. We also log every disconnection over a week of normal use.
