What separates the best eSIMs for the USA on this page?

Scores here run from 8.8 down to 7.6, and the gap is mostly about what you actually need the line for. Saily sits at 8.8 with multi-network roaming, ad and malware blocking built into the profile, and an unlimited 30-day option at $54.99. US Mobile scores 8.6 and is the odd one out: a real US carrier plan with a US phone number, calls and texts, and your choice of the Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T network, at $17.50 a month for unlimited on the Starter plan.

Ubigi and Airalo both score 8.5 but get there differently. Ubigi, owned by Transatel (NTT), posted the fastest downloads of the seven in every location tested, though it runs on AT&T only. Airalo installed and came online in under three minutes and held a signal everywhere tested, at $2.60 per GB. Nomad is the price play at $1.80 per GB, or 20 GB for $32. Holafly charges $99 a month for genuinely unlimited data, and GigSky costs $3.00 per GB but reaches maritime and small island networks.

What should you check before buying a US eSIM?

Coverage and network quality carry the most weight in our scoring, so start with which network the plan roams onto and whether that network is strong where you will be.

  • Network: Ubigi is AT&T only, with no fallback. Airalo, Nomad and Saily move between carriers.
  • Price per gigabyte: Nomad at $1.80 per GB against GigSky at $3.00 per GB and Airalo at $2.60 per GB.
  • Setup: Airalo took under three minutes; US Mobile took nine minutes because of the identity check.
  • Phone number: US Mobile includes one. Saily and Airalo are data only.
  • Unlimited: Holafly used 61 GB in a month with no cut-off, but hotspot is capped on some plans, so read the specific plan.

Short trips and city breaks

Airalo for installation in under three minutes and a signal everywhere tested, or Nomad if you want the lowest per-gigabyte price.

Working remotely or tethering

Holafly for genuinely unlimited data and 24/7 human support, or Saily's unlimited 30-day option at $54.99.

You need a US number

US Mobile, which includes calls and texts and lets you pick the network.

Speed and device coverage

Ubigi for the fastest downloads measured, and GigSky if you need Apple Watch cellular or coverage in places smaller providers skip.

For a US number with calls and texts, US Mobile is the pick. Nomad suits anyone watching cost per gigabyte, while Holafly fits heavy tethering and Saily covers multi-network roaming with ad blocking. GigSky is the one for Apple Watch cellular and out-of-the-way coverage.

Questions about best esim data plans for the usa in 2027

Will an eSIM work on my phone?
Every iPhone from the XS onward, most Pixels from the 3, and recent Samsung Galaxy S and Fold models support eSIM, and the phone must be carrier-unlocked. Check Settings before you buy: on iPhone look for Cellular then Add eSIM, on Android look for Network then SIMs then Add. A phone bought on a US carrier contract is often locked until it is paid off.
Which US network does each one use?
This matters more than price. Airalo and Nomad roam mostly onto T-Mobile and AT&T; Ubigi uses AT&T; Saily roams across several. T-Mobile is strong in cities and weaker in rural mountain areas; AT&T and Verizon cover more of rural America. If you are driving through national parks, pick an eSIM that reaches AT&T or Verizon and check the provider's own coverage page for your route.
Do I keep my phone number?
Usually not. Most travel eSIMs are data-only: your existing SIM stays in the phone for calls and texts, and the eSIM carries data. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or Wi-Fi calling for voice. Only a few plans include a usable US number, and we have marked which in the specs.
How do you test eSIMs?
Each eSIM is bought through the normal public checkout and installed on the same unlocked handset. We record the time from payment to a working data connection, then run the same speed tests in the same three locations — a dense city centre, a suburb and a rural road — on the same days, and note which network the phone attached to. Cost per gigabyte is computed from the 10 GB plan price, or the nearest size.
