What separates the best pillows on this page?
Fill type and adjustability do most of the work. The Coop Home Goods Original (8.9, $72) is shredded memory foam you top up or scoop out — our side sleeper added the extra bag, the back sleeper removed a third. It held loft under load better than any shredded pillow here, and it is fully machine washable. It runs warm, and the foam can feel lumpy until fluffed.
The Layla Kapok (8.2, $109) blends shredded foam with kapok fibre for the softest feel of the adjustable group, with a 120-night trial. Its fill cannot be machine washed, and it sleeps slightly warmer than the Coop.
If you want zero fluffing, look at latex. The Purple Harmony (8.2, $199) had the lowest surface temperature rise in the test and comes in three loft heights, but it is the most expensive here and heavy. The Saatva Latex (8.1, $165) was second-coolest, springs back instantly, and has a washable outer layer; it is sold direct, not on Amazon.
Down feel with structure points to the Casper Original (8.1, $65): its inner core kept 3.6 inches under load, far better than plain down-alternative. It is not adjustable and the 30-night trial is short. The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud (8.1, $89) kept our back sleeper's neck on the laser line all week, but it was the warmest pillow in the test and too low for our side sleeper. The Brooklinen Down (8, $69) has the classic hotel feel and a 365-day trial, yet compressed to 2.8 inches under load and needs daily fluffing. The Beckham 2-pack (7.4, $40) is $20 a pillow, soft enough for stomach sleepers, but compressed to 2.5 inches and lost the most loft of any pillow in one week.
What should you check before buying a pillow?
Our scoring puts support and alignment at 30 points, comfort at 20, cooling at 15, materials and durability at 15, and value at 20. Match those weights to how you sleep.
- Loft under load: the Casper core held 3.6 inches; the Brooklinen flattened to 2.8 and the Beckham to 2.5.
- Temperature: the Purple Harmony and Saatva Latex ran coolest; the Tempur-Pedic ran warmest.
- Washing: the Coop, Casper, Brooklinen and Beckham are machine washable; the Layla fill is not.
- Trial length: 365 nights on the Brooklinen, 120 on the Layla, 100 on the Coop, 30 on the Casper.
Which pillow for whom?
Side sleepers who want to tune height: Coop Home Goods Original or Layla Kapok. Back sleepers: Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud. Hot sleepers: Purple Harmony or Saatva Latex. Down lovers: Brooklinen Down. Stomach sleepers on a budget: Beckham 2-pack.
For an adjustable pillow you can wash, the Coop Home Goods Original at $72 is the pick. Hot sleepers should look at the Purple Harmony or the Saatva Latex, and back sleepers get the best alignment from the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud. If you want down feel on a budget, the Beckham 2-pack is $20 a pillow.
