Frequently asked questions about job search sites
Why would anyone pay for a job board?
Because the free ones are full of stale, duplicate and fake remote listings. FlexJobs charges because every listing is checked by a person before it appears; in our four weeks 98% of its first-page results were real and current against 71% on the biggest free site. Whether that is worth $25 a month depends on how many hours you spend filtering.
Which site has the most jobs?
Indeed, by a wide margin, followed by LinkedIn. Volume is not the same as relevance: Indeed returned the most results for all three searches and the most duplicates and expired postings.
How do I spot a fake job listing?
No company name or a generic one, a salary far above market, an interview by chat only, a request for personal data or payment, and an email domain that is not the employer's. Cross-check every listing on the employer's careers page — that is what we did for this ranking.
How do you test job sites?
Three searches, weekly for four weeks, on every site. For each first page we check whether the job exists on the employer's site, whether it is still open, and whether it duplicates another listing. We also set alerts, build a profile, apply to a test posting and use the salary and company tools.
