Compare the Best Business Phone Systems (VoIP) of 2026
Eight services ran the same five-seat office for two weeks on the same 100 Mbps connection. We scored 40 recorded calls per system blind for clarity and dropouts, ported a real number through each, built the same auto-attendant and ring groups, and priced five users on the plan the office actually needed. Taxes and regulatory fees are extra on every bill here.

Frequently asked questions about business phone systems
What internet speed does VoIP need?
About 100 kbps up and down per simultaneous call, so even five concurrent calls need only around half a megabit. Speed is rarely the problem; jitter and buffering are. Put voice traffic on a QoS rule or a separate VLAN and the quality problems most offices blame on their provider disappear. Our test connection was a shared 100 Mbps line with no QoS, which is why the scores spread as they did.
Can I keep my existing number?
Yes. Porting is a legal right in the US and every provider here does it free. It took three to eleven business days in our test. Never cancel the old service before the port completes, or the number can be released and lost.
Why is my bill higher than the advertised price?
Federal Universal Service Fund contributions, E911 fees, state and local taxes and provider "regulatory recovery" charges are added on top, typically 10 to 20 percent. RingCentral and Vonage added the most in our quotes; Ooma and Google Voice the least. Ask for a full quote with fees before signing.
How do you test business phone systems?
Five seats run for two weeks on one 100 Mbps connection with no prioritisation. We record 40 calls per system — landline, mobile and VoIP-to-VoIP, some during deliberate network load — and score them blind for clarity, delay and dropouts. We port a real number, build the same auto-attendant and ring group, test voicemail transcription against the recording, and price the plan the setup required.
