What separates the best homework help websites?

Price is not the dividing line here. Khan Academy is Free and scores 8.8. Brainly costs $3.99 and scores 6.5. The gap is in how each one answers.

Khan Academy earned the highest teacher grade in our test, and Khanmigo walks through the steps instead of handing over the answer. Its weak spots: no textbook-specific solutions, and humanities help is thin.

Chegg Study ($15.95) returned worked solutions for the exact problems in our calculus and chemistry textbooks, and expert answers to our own questions came back within hours, mostly correct. It also scored lowest on integrity — answers first, explanation second.

Quizlet ($7.99) brings 500 million study sets and a Learn mode that schedules review. Its user-made sets contain errors, and textbook solutions are thinner than Chegg's.

Wyzant (from about $35/hr) was the only service that gave useful, specific essay feedback, and its tutors explained our calculus and chemistry mistakes better than any written answer. You pay per hour, and quality depends on the tutor you choose.

Photomath (Free, Plus $9.99/mo) solved 19 of our 20 math and chemistry-math questions correctly with steps, but it is math only. Grammarly ($12) caught grammar, clarity and tone issues in our essay answers that teachers also flagged — writing only. Course Hero ($9.95) has notes for many specific university courses, with answer quality lower than Chegg in our grading. Brainly ($3.99) drew the lowest teacher grade, with several confidently wrong answers.

What should you check before buying?

Our scoring weighted answer quality 30, coverage 20, study tools 20, learning and integrity 10, and value 20. Run your own version of that list.

  • Subject fit: Photomath is math only. Grammarly is writing only. Khan Academy is thin on essays.
  • Answer source: Wyzant uses tutors, Brainly uses students, Chegg uses experts.
  • Integrity risk: Chegg cooperates with university investigations, and Course Hero's uploaded materials raise copyright questions.
  • Cost shape: Wyzant bills per hour; the rest are subscriptions.

Which one for whom?

Pick Grammarly for the essay half of homework. Pick Course Hero for course notes and study guides. Pick Brainly for quick, cheap answers to common questions.

Khan Academy suits free, step-by-step learning across math and science, while Wyzant is the pick when you need a tutor to see your actual work, essays included. Chegg Study fits textbook-specific worked solutions, Quizlet fits flashcard revision, and Photomath fits camera-first math steps. For essays, Grammarly covers the writing half; Course Hero and Brainly cover notes and quick answers at lower prices.

Questions about best homework help websites and study tools of 2027

Is using a homework help site cheating?
Using it to understand a method is studying; submitting its answer as your own is not, and most colleges treat expert-answer sites as unauthorised aid. Every service here has an honour code and cooperates with schools on misuse. Our integrity score rewards tools that show the steps and make you work them.
Which is best for math?
Photomath and Khan Academy for learning the steps; Chegg for textbook problem sets with worked solutions; Wyzant for a human who can see where you are stuck. In our calculus set, Chegg's solutions were the most complete and Khan Academy taught the concept best.
Are AI answers reliable?
Not on their own. The AI assistants built into Chegg, Course Hero, Quizlet and Brainly got most of our calculus and chemistry questions right and several confidently wrong; the essay feedback was generic. Treat AI answers as a starting point and check them against a worked source.
How do you test study tools?
Thirty questions — ten calculus, ten chemistry, ten essay and history — submitted to each service the same way a student would. Two teachers grade every answer blind on correctness and explanation. We also use each service's flashcards, practice tests and tutoring for a week and price everything monthly.
