We checked how each brand established its AAFCO statement — a feeding trial counts for more than a spreadsheet formulation — whether it employs a full-time veterinary nutritionist, its FDA recall record, and the cost per 1,000 calories. What separates the top picks on this page?

Score and price don't move together here. Pro Plan Adult Complete Essentials Chicken & Rice scores 9 at $72 and costs $1.20 per 1,000 kcal. Royal Canin Medium Adult Dry Dog Food scores 8.4 at $85 and costs $1.68 per 1,000 kcal. Orijen Original scores 7.2 at $105 and costs $2.90 per 1,000 kcal.

The split is how each brand backs its AAFCO statement. Purina, Hill's and Royal Canin establish theirs by feeding trial, with veterinary nutritionists on staff and plants they own. Blue Buffalo and Orijen formulate instead. The Farmer's Dog formulates too, and its $7.10 per 1,000 kcal is about six times Purina Pro Plan.

Ingredient lists don't track score either. Orijen lists 38% protein from named fresh and raw animal ingredients and still lands at 7.2. Pro Plan's list shows corn gluten meal and poultry by-product meal and lands at 9.

What should I check before buying?

Start with the AAFCO statement on the bag. A feeding trial is stronger evidence than a formulation, and it's the first thing we scored, at 30 points.

Then weigh the trade-offs each food carries:

Safety record (20 points): Blue Buffalo has six recalls between 2007 and 2017. Iams has two limited recalls in the last fifteen years. The Farmer's Dog, Orijen and the other Purina and Hill's foods list no recalls.
Value (20 points): Iams ProActive Health Adult MiniChunks is $0.88 per 1,000 kcal, the cheapest in the ranking. The Farmer's Dog is $7.10.
Ingredients (20 points): Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach uses salmon as a single animal protein with oatmeal and rice, which makes an elimination trial easier to run.
Acceptance (10 points): Twelve of twelve panel dogs ate The Farmer's Dog immediately. Orijen also went down eagerly.

Protein matters for the dog in front of you. Science Diet Adult Chicken & Barley is 20% protein, the lowest here. Iams is 25%. Orijen is 38%.

If your dog has a sensitive stomach, Pro Plan Sensitive Skin & Stomach Salmon & Rice is the one our panel's loose-stool dogs settled on. On a tight budget, Iams ProActive Health Adult MiniChunks costs $0.88 per 1,000 kcal, and if your dog turns its nose up at kibble, The Farmer's Dog is the fresh option.

Questions about best dog food of 2027

What does the AAFCO statement actually tell me?

It appears in small print on every bag and says two things: which life stage the food is complete for, and how that was established. "Formulated to meet" means the recipe was checked against a nutrient table on paper. "Animal feeding tests substantiate" means dogs actually ate it under supervision and stayed healthy. The second is stronger evidence, and only Purina Pro Plan, Hill's, Royal Canin and Iams among our eight use it.

Is grain-free better?

There is no evidence it is better for a dog without a diagnosed grain allergy, which is uncommon. Since 2018 the FDA has been investigating reports of dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs eating grain-free diets heavy in peas, lentils and potatoes; no causal link has been established and the investigation has not concluded. Given that, we do not rank a food higher for being grain-free, and if your dog has no allergy there is no reason to seek it out. Ask your vet.

Is fresh food worth four times the price?

Fresh foods like The Farmer's Dog are genuinely well formulated, and our panel ate them most eagerly. At $6 to $9 per 1,000 kcal against $1.20 for Purina Pro Plan, feeding a 60-pound dog fresh costs roughly $150 a month more. There is no evidence a healthy dog does better on fresh than on a feeding-trial-tested kibble. Buy it for palatability and convenience if the budget is there, not because the cheaper food is failing.

How do you assess dog food?

We read the full label, the guaranteed analysis and the AAFCO statement off the bag, and compute cost per 1,000 kcal from the published calorie content and the current price. We check the FDA recall database for the last ten years, and ask each brand who formulates its diets and whether it owns its manufacturing. Twelve dogs of mixed size then eat each food for two weeks while owners log acceptance and stool quality.
