What separates the best home security cameras on this page?

Price runs from $35.98 to $199.99, and the scores run from 7.2 to 8.8. The gap is mostly about what happens after you stop paying.

The eufy SoloCam S340 (8.8, $199.99) tops the list because its solar panel held 100% through two weeks of events, and person and vehicle detection plus clip history work with no plan. It needs a few hours of sun a day, and there is no HomeKit.

The Reolink Argus 4 Pro (8.4, $149.99) stitches two lenses into a 180° 4K view and records to microSD or an NVR without a subscription. Colour night vision comes from ambient light alone. The stitched seam shows on close objects, and battery lasts two months without the solar panel.

At the budget end, the TP-Link Tapo C120 (8.3, $39.99) is wired, records continuously to 512 GB, and runs person, pet and vehicle detection on the camera for free. The Wyze Cam v4 (8.2, $35.98) gives 2.5K, colour night vision, a spotlight and siren, and continuous microSD recording.

Subscription cameras score lower. The Google Nest Cam (battery) (7.8, $179.99) labelled every staged event correctly with zero false alerts in two weeks, but full history needs Nest Aware at $8 a month. The Ring Outdoor Cam Plus (7.2, $99.99) records nothing without a plan. The Arlo Pro 5S 2K (7.2, $179.99) has the sharpest video of the battery cameras, yet without Arlo Secure it barely functions.

What should you check before buying a home security camera?

Our scoring puts video and night quality at 25 points, detection and alerts at 20, storage and subscription at 20, install and power at 15, and value at 20. Work through those in order.

  • Storage: local microSD or NVR (eufy, Reolink, Tapo, Wyze, Blink) versus cloud-only (Ring, Arlo).
  • Power: wired (Tapo C120, Wyze Cam v4) versus battery (Blink Outdoor 4, Nest Cam, Ring, Arlo) versus solar (eufy S340).
  • Detection: on-camera and free on eufy, Reolink, Tapo, Wyze and Nest; plan-only on Blink, Ring and Arlo.
  • Plan cost: Blink at $3 a camera, Ring Home Basic at $4.99, Arlo Secure at $7.99 per camera or $17.99 for all, Nest Aware at $8 a month.

Which camera suits which home?

For a sunny wall and no subscription, the eufy SoloCam S340. For one camera covering a whole garden corner, the Reolink Argus 4 Pro. For a covered outlet and the lowest spend, the TP-Link Tapo C120 or Wyze Cam v4. For set-and-forget batteries, the Blink Outdoor 4. For the most accurate alerts and the best app, the Google Nest Cam (battery). For Ring's ecosystem, the Ring Outdoor Cam Plus. For the sharpest battery-camera video, the Arlo Pro 5S 2K.

If you want no subscription at all, the eufy SoloCam S340 and Reolink Argus 4 Pro record locally and detect for free. If you want the lowest spend, the TP-Link Tapo C120 at $39.99 and Wyze Cam v4 at $35.98 are wired and record continuously to microSD. If you would rather pay monthly for the best app and alerts, the Google Nest Cam (battery) is the pick.

Questions about best home security cameras of 2027

Do I have to pay a subscription?
For Ring, Nest, Blink and Arlo, yes for anything beyond a live view — recorded clips, person and package detection and history need a plan ($4–$10 a month per camera or home). Eufy, Reolink, Wyze (with a microSD card) and TP-Link Tapo record locally and detect people without a plan. Our three-year cost includes whichever plan the headline features need.
Battery or wired?
Battery cameras go anywhere and lasted one to four months at our event rate (about 15 clips a day); solar panels made the Eufy and Reolink effectively perpetual. Wired cameras (Tapo, Wyze on its cable) record continuously and never need charging, which for a front door with heavy footfall is worth the drilling.
Are these cameras private?
Every camera here encrypts video in transit; local-storage cameras keep footage in your home. Ring and Nest have policies on sharing with police (Ring ended its Request for Assistance tool in 2024); Wyze had a 2024 incident where some users briefly saw others' thumbnails, and Eufy was found in 2022 to send thumbnails to the cloud despite "local-only" claims — both since fixed and disclosed. Turn on two-factor login on every brand.
How do you test security cameras?
Each camera spends a week at the front door and a week at the back garden. We stage a person walking up at noon, dusk and 11 pm, a parcel drop, a cat crossing and a car passing, three times each, and record whether the camera detected and labelled it and how many seconds until the phone buzzed. We count false alerts, measure battery drain at that event rate, and price the camera plus 36 months of the plan needed for person detection and clip history.
