What separates the best gaming routers on this page?

Three kits, three different answers to the same problem. The Deco BE63 scores 9 and costs $399 for the three-pack. It hit 612 Mbps in the far bedroom and held 580 Mbps with thirty devices and four 4K streams running. Every node carries three 2.5 Gbps ports, so wired backhaul is easy. The catch is the price and HomeShield Pro, which upsells security features.

The RT-BE88U scores 8.6 at $299. It is a single router with ten wired ports, including a 10 Gbps and a 2.5 Gbps, plus AiProtection security by Trend Micro that stays free for the life of the router. Adaptive QoS and a gaming port prioritise one device. At distance it managed 421 Mbps in the far bedroom, which is what a single unit does against mesh.

The Orbi 770 Series scores 7.9 at $699 for two nodes. Its dedicated backhaul band kept the second node at 574 Mbps at distance, and two nodes covered what took three from most kits. Netgear Armor is a subscription after the trial.

What should I check before buying a gaming router?

Scoring here weights throughput and range at 30, reliability under load at 20, features and control at 20, setup and app at 15, and value at 15. Match those to your house.

  • Distance: if your gaming room is far from the router, mesh wins. The Deco BE63's 612 Mbps far-bedroom figure is the one to beat.
  • Wired devices: count them. The RT-BE88U gives you ten ports; the Deco BE63 gives you three 2.5 Gbps ports on every node.
  • Subscriptions: AiProtection is free for the life of the RT-BE88U. HomeShield Pro and Netgear Armor are paid.
  • Setup patience: the RT-BE88U's settings menu will overwhelm anyone who does not want it.

Deco BE63

For the household that games in a far room and wants the strongest measured figure plus wired backhaul on every node, and will pay $399 for the three-pack.

RT-BE88U

For the person who wants to configure things: ten wired ports, free lifetime security, Adaptive QoS and a gaming port, at $299.

Orbi 770 Series

For a large house where two nodes need to cover what took three from most kits, at $699 for two nodes.

Pick the Deco BE63 if the far bedroom matters most and you want three 2.5 Gbps ports on every node. Pick the RT-BE88U if you want ten wired ports, free lifetime security and a settings menu worth digging into at $299. Pick the Orbi 770 Series if a large house needs two nodes to cover what took three from most kits.

Questions about best routers for gaming

Do I need Wi-Fi 7?
Only if you own devices that speak it, which today means a recent flagship phone or laptop. Wi-Fi 7 routers do handle congestion better even with older clients, so they are a reasonable buy if you are replacing a router you will keep five years. Paying a premium for Wi-Fi 7 to serve a house full of Wi-Fi 5 devices changes nothing you will notice.
Mesh or a single router?
Under about 1,500 sq ft on one floor, a good single router beats a cheap mesh, because every mesh hop costs bandwidth. Over that, or across floors or through brick, mesh wins clearly: our far-bedroom measurement roughly doubled when we moved from a single unit to a two-node kit in the same house.
Why does my new router need a subscription?
Several makers now put parental controls, network security and even some device management behind a monthly fee. Eero Plus, Netgear Armor and TP-Link HomeShield Pro all work this way. We scored that against them, and marked which routers give you the core features outright.
How do you test routers?
Each router replaces the last in the same 2,200 sq ft, two-storey house on the same 1 Gbps connection, with the same laptop as the client. We measure in four fixed positions — same room, one floor up, far bedroom, garage — three runs each, then repeat with thirty devices connected and four 4K streams plus a large upload running. We also log every disconnection over a week of normal use.
