Frequently asked questions about background check sites
Can I use these sites to check a job applicant or tenant?
Not the people-search sites. BeenVerified, TruthFinder, Intelius, Spokeo and Instant Checkmate are not consumer reporting agencies under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and their terms prohibit employment, tenant, credit and insurance use; using them that way exposes you to liability. For those decisions use an FCRA-compliant service like Checkr or GoodHire, get written consent, and follow the adverse-action rules.
How accurate are people-search sites?
On our ten test people, the best (BeenVerified, TruthFinder) found the current address, a working phone and correct relatives for eight or nine; every site also produced at least one wrong record — a stale address, someone else's relative, a merged identity. Treat a report as leads to verify, not facts.
How do I remove myself from these sites?
Each has an opt-out page (we link them on every card) and removes your listing within days to weeks; data returns as it is re-bought. Services like DeleteMe (in our identity-theft ranking) do this continuously for a fee. California, Colorado and other state privacy laws let residents demand deletion.
How do you test background check sites?
