What separates the best Wi-Fi 7 routers on this page?

The four picks split on one question: do you need coverage in a far room, or ports and settings on one box? The Deco BE63 scores 9 and hits 612 Mbps in the far bedroom, 180 Mbps clear of the next mesh kit. The RT-BE88U scores 8.6 and manages 421 Mbps at the same distance — a single unit cannot beat mesh at range, but it carries ten wired ports including a 10 Gbps and a 2.5 Gbps.

Price runs from $299 to $699. The eero Pro 7 scores 8.2 and set up in six minutes from the box, the fastest here. The Orbi 770 Series scores 7.9 and its dedicated backhaul band held 574 Mbps at distance from two units.

Deco BE63

For a house with a far bedroom that needs real speed, and for anyone who wants wired backhaul without buying extra hardware.

RT-BE88U

For the person who wants to configure things: Adaptive QoS, a gaming port that prioritises one device, and free lifetime security. Skip it if a settings menu puts you off.

eero Pro 7

For the easiest setup here and a smart-home hub in one box — if you accept eero Plus at $9.99 a month for parental controls and network security.

Orbi 770 Series

For a large house where two nodes must cover what took three from most kits. At $699 it only makes sense at that size.

The Deco BE63 suits a house with a far room that needs speed, and the RT-BE88U suits anyone who wants ten wired ports and free lifetime security on one box. The eero Pro 7 is for the fastest setup and a built-in Zigbee and Thread hub, while the Orbi 770 Series is for a large house where two nodes have to cover the distance.

Questions about best wi-fi 7 routers

Do I need Wi-Fi 7?
Only if you own devices that speak it, which today means a recent flagship phone or laptop. Wi-Fi 7 routers do handle congestion better even with older clients, so they are a reasonable buy if you are replacing a router you will keep five years. Paying a premium for Wi-Fi 7 to serve a house full of Wi-Fi 5 devices changes nothing you will notice.
Mesh or a single router?
Under about 1,500 sq ft on one floor, a good single router beats a cheap mesh, because every mesh hop costs bandwidth. Over that, or across floors or through brick, mesh wins clearly: our far-bedroom measurement roughly doubled when we moved from a single unit to a two-node kit in the same house.
Why does my new router need a subscription?
Several makers now put parental controls, network security and even some device management behind a monthly fee. Eero Plus, Netgear Armor and TP-Link HomeShield Pro all work this way. We scored that against them, and marked which routers give you the core features outright.
How do you test routers?
Each router replaces the last in the same 2,200 sq ft, two-storey house on the same 1 Gbps connection, with the same laptop as the client. We measure in four fixed positions — same room, one floor up, far bedroom, garage — three runs each, then repeat with thirty devices connected and four 4K streams plus a large upload running. We also log every disconnection over a week of normal use.
