Best AI Writing Tools of 2027
Seven tools, six identical briefs — a product description, a how-to introduction, a cold email, a landing page, a technical explainer and a rewrite of a badly written paragraph. Two editors scored every output blind, counted how much editing it needed, and checked every factual claim. We also read what each vendor does with the text you give it.

What separates the best AI writing tools?
Score and price don't move together here. Claude sits at 8.8 for $20, ChatGPT at 8.7 for $20, and Jasper at 8.0 for $69. Both editors ranked Claude's technical explainer and long-form draft first, and it held the brief and tone across 1,500 words without drifting. ChatGPT scored level with Claude on editing needed across the six briefs, and adds images, charts, data analysis and browsing in the same subscription.
Grammarly is the editor, not the writer. It scored 8.4 at $12, caught every real grammar issue our editors flagged in the rewrite brief, and works in Gmail, Docs, Word, Slack and the browser. As a generative writer it scored 5.
Below that, the tools specialise. Notion AI (7.9, $10) answers from your own wiki and cites the page. Writesonic (7.8, $39) builds an outline from the current top-ranking pages for a keyword. Copy.ai (7.7, $49) chains research, drafting and enrichment into repeatable workflows.
What should you check before buying?
We weight output quality at 30, control and brand voice at 20, workflow and integrations at 20, accuracy and disclosure at 15, and value at 15. Read your own priorities against those.
- Editing load. Writesonic's prose is serviceable rather than good — editing score 5. Copy.ai's long-form drafts needed the most editing after Grammarly.
- Brand voice. Jasper's brand voice trained on our sample copy and held it across all six briefs. ChatGPT's tone drifted toward generic marketing language on two briefs.
- Accuracy. Claude still produced one unsupported claim across the six briefs. Writesonic cites the sources it browsed, which made fact-checking faster.
- Data handling. ChatGPT's consumer tiers train on your chats unless you turn it off.
- Real cost. Jasper is $39 a seat against $20 for the general assistants that outscored it. Writesonic's credit system makes the real cost hard to predict.
