Is the Nest Wifi Pro Worth It?

Best-looking mesh, no subscription. Three nodes for $299 with no monthly fee and hardware you will not hide is a genuinely good deal for a normal home. The wired ports are the compromise.

Nest Wifi Pro Pros & Cons

Pros
  • No subscription for anything, including the parental controls
  • Thread border router and Matter support built into each node
  • Nodes look like a lamp, not networking kit
  • $299 for three units
Cons
  • 409 Mbps at distance, behind the Wi-Fi 7 kits
  • One gigabit LAN port per node and no 2.5 Gbps anywhere
  • Not backward compatible with older Nest Wifi units

What problem does the Nest Wifi Pro solve?

The Nest Wifi Pro is a three-node mesh system that covers a rated 6,600 sq ft and costs $299 with no subscription at all. That combination is the point: you buy the hardware once, and the parental controls, security and network features keep working without a monthly fee. The nodes are also designed to be seen rather than hidden, which matters in a living room where a router with antennas would stand out.

It suits homes that want coverage and no ongoing cost. The compromise is wired speed: each node has a single 1 GbE LAN port and there is no 2.5 Gbps anywhere in the system.

How did we score the Nest Wifi Pro?

Throughput & range: 22 out of 30. We measured with the same client in the same four positions in the same 2,200 sq ft house, on the same 1 Gbps line, three runs each. The Nest Wifi Pro returned 871 Mbps in the same room and 409 Mbps in the far bedroom.

Reliability under load: 17 out of 20. We connected thirty devices, ran four 4K streams and a large upload while re-testing, and tracked how many drops occurred over a week.

Features & control: 15 out of 20. We checked band steering, mesh backhaul, VLANs, guest networks, parental controls and what sits behind a subscription. Nothing here requires one.

Setup & app: 15 out of 15. We timed the run from box to working network, then assessed app quality and firmware updates.

Value: 13 out of 15. We judged the price against the coverage the house actually needed, plus any subscription for features that should be free. There is no subscription to count against it.

What does the Nest Wifi Pro do well?

The strongest result is the same-room figure of 871 Mbps, which is close to the Wi-Fi 7 kits we tested and achieved on Wi-Fi 6E hardware. At the far end of the house it held 409 Mbps, enough for streaming and calls in the rooms where a single router usually gives up.

Nothing is locked behind a subscription, including the parental controls. Each node also includes a Thread border router and Matter support, so smart-home devices can join the network directly rather than through a separate hub. And the nodes look like a lamp, not networking kit, which is why they can sit in the open where the signal is best.

Wi-Fi 6E, mesh and Thread explained

That band is less crowded, so devices that support it get a cleaner channel. Mesh means several nodes share one network name and hand devices between them as you move around the house, instead of forcing a reconnection. Thread is a low-power radio protocol for smart-home devices; a border router connects those Thread devices to your network and the internet. Matter is a common language that lets devices from different brands work with the same controllers.

What is in the box and how is it built?

The system is a three-pack rated for 6,600 sq ft, running Wi-Fi 6E (AXE5400) with mesh enabled. It is not Wi-Fi 7. Each node provides one 1 GbE LAN port, and core features work without a subscription at all. The nodes are shaped and finished to be displayed rather than tucked away, which is unusual for networking hardware at this price.

How does it compare with the tested competition?

Against the Deco BE63 at $399 (score 9), the Nest Wifi Pro is cheaper and subscription-free, but the Deco is Wi-Fi 7, measured 941 Mbps in the same room and 612 Mbps in the far bedroom, and carries three 2.5 GbE ports per node. The Nest Wifi Pro has one 1 GbE port per node.

Against the RT-BE88U at $299 (score 8.6), the price is identical, but that is a single Wi-Fi 7 router rated for 3,000 sq ft with ten LAN ports including 10 GbE and 2.5 GbE. It measured 936 Mbps in the same room and 421 Mbps in the far bedroom. The Nest Wifi Pro trades port count and peak speed for three nodes and 6,600 sq ft of rated coverage.

Against the eero Pro 7 at $549 (score 8.2), the scores match, but the eero costs more and requires eero Plus for security and controls. The eero is Wi-Fi 7, measured 928 Mbps in the same room and 498 Mbps in the far bedroom, and has two 5 GbE ports per node. The Nest Wifi Pro is the cheaper, subscription-free option with slower wired ports.

Where does the Nest Wifi Pro fall short?

Ports and peak speed are the two losses. One gigabit LAN port per node and no 2.5 Gbps anywhere limits wired devices, and the 409 Mbps far-bedroom result sits behind the Wi-Fi 7 kits. It is also not backward compatible with older Nest Wifi units, so an existing Nest Wifi setup cannot be extended with these nodes.

Is the Nest Wifi Pro good value at $299?

Three nodes for $299 with no monthly fee is the whole argument. The value score of 13 out of 15 reflects a price that buys the coverage the house needed without a subscription for features that should be free.

Who should buy the Nest Wifi Pro?

Homes that want coverage and no ongoing cost. If your priority is a network that covers a normal house, keeps working without a monthly bill and does not look like networking kit, this is the system to shortlist. If you need 2.5 Gbps wired ports or the fastest far-room throughput, the Wi-Fi 7 alternatives above are the better fit.
