What separates the best coffee makers on this page?

Three machines tie at 8.5: the OXO Brew 9-Cup, the Breville Precision Brewer Thermal and the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select. They get there differently. The OXO is $200, SCA-certified, and its single dial runs a 24-hour timer and a small-batch mode for 2–4 cups. The Breville is $330 and adds six brew modes, adjustable temperature, bloom and flow rate, plus cold brew. The Moccamaster is $359, hand-built, with a 5-year warranty and the tightest temperature band we measured, 198–202°F.

Below them, the Bonavita Connoisseur 8-Cup at $160 is the least you can spend for a genuinely proper brew: one switch, a pre-infusion bloom, SCA certification, a six-minute pot at 197°F. The Ninja DualBrew Pro at $230 brews grounds or K-Cup pods and adds a frother, but measured 192°F. The Cuisinart PerfecTemp 14-Cup at $100 gives you 14 cups and full programming at 190°F. The Keurig K-Elite at $170 makes a cup in about a minute at 188°F. The Mr. Coffee 12-Cup at $35 has a 24-hour timer and a pause-and-pour lid at 185°F.

What should you check before buying a coffee maker?

Brew quality carries 35 of the 100 points, so temperature and even extraction matter more than feature lists. Look for the 195–205°F window: the Moccamaster held 198–202°F, the Bonavita hit 197°F, and the cheaper machines ran cooler.

  • Carafe type: thermal carafes hold heat without a hot plate; the Cuisinart's hot plate cooks the last cups.
  • Programming: the OXO, Ninja, Cuisinart and Mr. Coffee have timers; the Moccamaster and Bonavita do not.
  • Cleanup and build: the Keurig needs nothing cleaned but pods cost 50–80 cents a cup; the Moccamaster's parts are all replaceable.
  • Speed: full pots run from under six minutes on the Moccamaster to eleven minutes on the Mr. Coffee.

Which coffee maker for whom?

For the most consistent brew and a machine you can repair, the Moccamaster KBGV Select fits. For adjustable control and cold brew, the Breville Precision Brewer Thermal. For SCA-certified brewing with a timer at $200, the OXO Brew 9-Cup. For the least spend on a proper brew, the Bonavita Connoisseur 8-Cup. For a household split between pods and grounds, the Ninja DualBrew Pro. For 14 cups and a charcoal filter, the Cuisinart PerfecTemp 14-Cup. For a one-minute cup, the Keurig K-Elite. For $35 with a timer, the Mr. Coffee 12-Cup.

If you want the most consistent brew and replaceable parts, the Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select is the pick. For adjustable temperature, bloom and cold brew, choose the Breville Precision Brewer Thermal. The OXO Brew 9-Cup suits anyone who wants SCA-certified brewing and a timer at $200, while the Bonavita Connoisseur 8-Cup is the least you can spend for a proper brew.

Questions about best coffee makers of 2027

What does SCA certified mean?
The Specialty Coffee Association certifies home brewers that hold water between 195°F and 205°F, brew a full carafe in four to eight minutes, and wet the grounds evenly. In our test the certified machines (Moccamaster, Breville, OXO, Bonavita) were the only ones that measured above 195°F at the grounds for the whole brew, and the taste panel ranked their pots highest.
Glass or thermal carafe?
Thermal if you drink over more than 20 minutes. A glass carafe on a hot plate cooked the coffee bitter within half an hour in our test; a thermal carafe kept it above 150°F for two hours. Thermal carafes are harder to see into and to clean.
Are pod machines worth it?
For one cup at a time with no cleanup, yes, and the Keurig K-Elite is the best of them. Pods cost 50–80 cents each against about 25 cents for a cup from a bag of beans, and pod coffee scored lowest with our panel. The Ninja DualBrew does both.
How do you test coffee makers?
Each machine brews the same medium-roast beans at 60 g per litre daily for a week. We log water temperature at the grounds with a probe, time the full pot, measure extraction with a refractometer, and have a five-person panel taste every pot blind. We then live with each machine: filling, filter handling, pouring, cleaning, descaling.
