What is an MVNO and is it worse?
An MVNO (Mint, Visible, US Mobile, Boost, Cricket) sells service on the big three networks — T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T — for less. Coverage is the same; the difference is deprioritisation: when a tower is busy, the host carrier's own postpaid customers go first. In our 30-day tests that meant slower speeds at rush hour in the city and no difference at all in the suburbs or rural drives.
Which network has the best coverage?
It depends on where you live. Nationally Verizon and AT&T still edge T-Mobile in rural areas; T-Mobile had the fastest 5G at our metro points. Check the carrier maps for your addresses, and use a 7-day or money-back trial — Visible, Mint and US Mobile all offer one.
Are the "unlimited" plans really unlimited?
They are unlimited in the sense that you will not be cut off. Most have a premium-data cap (35–50 GB on the cheaper plans) after which you are deprioritised, and hotspot data is capped separately. The plan pages list both; we show them on every card.
How do you test phone plans?
Same unlocked phone, same SIM slot, 30 days per carrier. Speed tests at 12 fixed metro points and on two rural drives, morning and evening; a 10 GB hotspot session; a support call timed; and a port-out at the end to see how easy leaving is. Prices are what we were billed for one line.
