Router or Mesh? The Measurement That Decides It
What we measured in the same house with single units and mesh kits, and the free test that tells you which you need.
The five-minute test
Stand where your Wi-Fi is worst and run a speed test on your phone. Then stand next to the router and run it again. If the worst spot gets less than a quarter of what you get beside the router, no single router will fix it — you need mesh or a wire.
What we measured
In the same 2,200 sq ft house on a 1 Gbps line: single routers managed 268 to 421 Mbps in the far bedroom. Mesh kits managed 409 to 612 Mbps in the same spot. Beside the router everything was within 70 Mbps of everything else.
So
- Flat or small house, one floor: a single good router. The Archer AX55 at $79 is enough.
- Two floors, or brick, or over 1,500 sq ft: mesh.
- Very large or awkward: tri-band mesh with dedicated backhaul, or run an Ethernet cable to the second node and any mesh will do.
The upgrade nobody mentions
One Ethernet cable to a second node beats every wireless improvement in this ranking. If you can run a wire, run the wire.
