Frequently asked questions about portable monitors
Will it work with one cable?
Only if your laptop's USB-C port carries video (DisplayPort Alt Mode) and enough power. Every MacBook and most Windows laptops from 2019 on do; check for a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol next to the port. Every monitor here also has mini-HDMI for older machines and consoles, which then needs a separate USB power cable.
IPS or OLED?
OLED (ASUS MQ16AH, espresso Pro) gives perfect blacks, wider colour and thinner panels, at a higher price and with some burn-in risk on static layouts. IPS is cheaper, brighter in several cases, and fine for documents and video. For colour work OLED; for spreadsheets on a train IPS at half the price.
Do I need a touchscreen?
Touch works over USB-C on Windows and on iPad; macOS does not support touch input on external displays (espresso solves this with its own driver). Unless you draw or present, it adds $50–$100 for little.
How do you test portable monitors?
A colorimeter measures peak brightness, contrast, sRGB and DCI-P3 coverage and colour error on each panel. We then use each monitor for a week on a MacBook Pro and a Windows laptop over one USB-C cable, plus a phone and a console over HDMI, and weigh and carry it in a bag every day.
