What separates the best POS systems on this page?
Two systems tie at the top: Helcim and Square, both at 8.9. They get there differently. Helcim runs interchange-plus pricing with no monthly fee and cost $658 a month on our basket. Square gives you free software with no contract and a $59 reader, but its flat rate came to $785 a month on the same basket. If your volume looks like ours, that gap is the whole decision.
Below them, Toast (8.5) is built for restaurants and nothing else — coursing, modifiers, kitchen displays and handhelds that survive a service. Shopify POS (8.2) keeps one stock count across shop floor, website and marketplaces. Clover (8.2) has the best physical hardware here, and Lightspeed Retail (8) handles size and colour matrices, serial numbers and purchase orders for shops with genuinely complicated stock. Stripe Terminal (8) puts card-present payments on the same Stripe account as your online business, with no monthly fee.
What should I check before buying a POS system?
Our scoring weights processing fees and total cost at 30 points, hardware and reliability at 20, features for the trade at 20, reporting and integrations at 15, and support and terms at 15. That order is a decent checklist.
- Total cost, not headline rate. Helcim came in at $658 a month, Stripe Terminal at $720, Square at $785 and Lightspeed at $860. Toast hardware starts at $799, often financed over a multi-year agreement.
- Offline behaviour. Square, Toast and Clover kept taking cards through our simulated outage. Shopify POS stopped entirely, and Stripe Terminal has no offline card acceptance.
- Contract terms. Helcim has no contract and no early-termination clause. Lightspeed needs an annual commitment to get the listed prices. Clover resellers sell the same hardware on three-year contracts with termination fees, and reseller-bought hardware is often locked to that processor.
- Trade fit. Toast has no equal for restaurant service; Lightspeed is for complex inventory; Shopify POS is for selling the same stock online and in store.
Lowest total cost at volume
Helcim suits businesses that want interchange-plus rates published openly, automatic volume discounts and no monthly fee. Skip it if you need restaurant features or strong offline card acceptance.
Restaurants
Toast is the pick for table maps, coursing, kitchen displays and spill-resistant hardware. Watch the $0 software plan, which charges a much higher card rate.
Retail with an online store
Shopify POS fits one inventory across store, website and marketplaces, with staff and loyalty shared between channels. Using a processor other than Shopify Payments adds a penalty fee per transaction.
Complex stock and developers
Lightspeed Retail handles variants, matrices and supplier catalogues for shops whose stock is genuinely complicated. Stripe Terminal suits teams with a developer who can build the till interface.
For most small businesses, Helcim wins on total cost at volume and Square wins on free software with no contract. Restaurants should look at Toast, multi-channel retailers at Shopify POS, and shops with complicated stock at Lightspeed Retail. Clover is the hardware pick if you buy directly from Clover, and Stripe Terminal is for teams that can build their own till.
