What separates the best online tutoring services?
Seven platforms made the list, and the scores run from 8.4 down to 7.4. The gap is rarely about teaching talent alone — it's about how each service vets tutors, matches you, and charges you.
Preply (8.4) leads on price: tutors from $5 an hour, and our Spanish learner's tutor at $18/hr was the best language lesson in the whole test. The catch is the weekly subscription — unused lessons expire unless you reschedule — and tutor quality varies, so profile reading matters.
Novakid (8.3) scored nearly as high for a narrower job: gamified 25-minute English lessons for four- to twelve-year-olds, with every teacher certified and background-checked. Our nine-year-old asked for the next lesson, the only platform where that happened. Lessons are 25 minutes only, and the equivalent is $30–45 per hour.
Wyzant (8.2) is the largest US academic marketplace — 65,000 tutors in 300 subjects, pay by the hour, no subscription, first hour refunded if it doesn't fit. Most tutors run $35–75 an hour, and background checks are optional.
Tutor.com (8.0) connected us to a chemistry tutor in four minutes at 10 pm, and it's free with a library card in much of the US. You get a different tutor each time, and hourly subscriptions expire monthly. Outschool (8.0) puts kids in small live classes from $10–20 a session; our tenth-grader joined a four-student algebra group at $16 a session. Group format means less individual attention.
Varsity Tutors (7.6) is the managed option: the SAT specialist raised our practice score 60 points in five sessions, but pricing is only revealed on a sales call and memberships auto-renew. Cambly (7.4) connects you instantly to a native English speaker at any hour, with sessions recorded — though tutors are native speakers, not necessarily teachers.
What should you check before buying online tutoring?
Vetting and matching carry the most weight in our scoring, so start there.
- Vetting: Novakid, Tutor.com, Outschool and Varsity Tutors check every teacher. Wyzant's background checks are optional, so read the badge on each profile.
- Matching: Tutor.com gives you a different tutor each time; Wyzant and Preply let you choose and keep one.
- Price policy: Preply's unused lessons expire unless you reschedule, Tutor.com's hourly subscriptions expire monthly, and Varsity Tutors memberships auto-renew.
- Format: 25-minute lessons at Novakid, group classes at Outschool, instant conversation at Cambly.
Language learners
Preply for choice and price, Cambly for instant conversation practice.
Kids and teens
Novakid for four- to twelve-year-olds learning English; Outschool for kids who want to pick their own small class.
Academic subjects and test prep
Wyzant for pay-as-you-go hourly help across 300 subjects; Varsity Tutors for a managed program with practice tests; Tutor.com for late-night homework help, free with a library card in much of the US.
For language practice, Preply's $18/hr tutor was the best lesson in our test, while Cambly suits anyone who wants to talk to a native speaker on demand. For kids, Novakid fits four- to twelve-year-olds learning English and Outschool suits those who prefer small group classes. For academic help, Wyzant is the pay-as-you-go pick, Tutor.com handles late-night homework, and Varsity Tutors is the managed option.
