What separates the cheapest VoIP services on this page?

Price is the easy part. The seven services here run from $10 to $20 a seat, and the scores spread from 7.2 to 8.6.

RingCentral scores 8.6 at $20 and took the highest blind call-quality score, including calls made under deliberate network load. Nextiva sits at 8.4 for the same $20, with call quality within a tenth of RingCentral and support that answered in under two minutes every time. Zoom Phone scores 8.5 at $15 and came in at $75 a month for five unlimited seats. Dialpad, also $15, scores 8.3 on the strength of a live transcript accurate enough that testers stopped taking notes.

At the cheaper end, Google Voice for Business is $10 and $50 a month for five seats, the lowest in the test, but needs a paid Google Workspace subscription on top. Ooma Office is $19.95 month-to-month with no contract, and Grasshopper is $18 priced per account, so five people share the $80 Small Business plan.

What should I check before buying a cheap VoIP plan?

Watch the add-ons. RingCentral's taxes and fees added about 18% to the quote, and call recording plus CRM integration need the $25 Advanced plan. Ooma's desktop app, recording and video need the $24.95 Pro plan. Google Voice's auto-attendant and ring groups need the $20 Standard tier, and Zoom Phone wants a Zoom Workplace licence alongside the phone plan.

Then match the plan to the job:

  • Call recording on the entry plan: not on Nextiva, not on Ooma Office.
  • Integrations: RingCentral connects Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft 365, Google and Slack; Ooma and Grasshopper list few.
  • Uptime SLA: Dialpad only on Pro and above.
  • Call quality: Dialpad ran a step behind RingCentral and Nextiva on loaded-network calls, and Grasshopper routes over the mobile network, so quality is your carrier's.

RingCentral

For teams that want the highest call-quality score here and integrations for nearly everything, and will pay $20 plus fees.

Zoom Phone

For teams already in Zoom every morning: $15 a seat, $75 a month for five unlimited seats, calls escalate to video in one tap.

Nextiva

For buyers who value support: a real person in under two minutes, a stuck number port fixed same-day, $20 a seat.

Dialpad

For sales and support calls where a readable live transcript and real-time coaching cards matter more than the last step of call quality.

Ooma Office

For a small office that wants phones on desks with no contract: $19.95, pre-configured hardware, working in ten minutes.

Google Voice for Business

For Google Workspace shops after the lowest bill: $10 a seat, $50 a month for five seats.

Grasshopper

For small teams that keep one handset: $18, priced per account, five people on the $80 Small Business plan.

If call quality and integrations decide it, RingCentral at 8.6 is the pick, with Nextiva at 8.4 close behind on support. Zoom Phone at 8.5 and $75 a month for five unlimited seats suits teams already living in Zoom, while Google Voice for Business at $10 a seat is the lowest bill here. Ooma Office and Grasshopper fit small offices that want no contract or one shared handset.

Questions about cheapest business voip services

What internet speed does VoIP need?
About 100 kbps up and down per simultaneous call, so even five concurrent calls need only around half a megabit. Speed is rarely the problem; jitter and buffering are. Put voice traffic on a QoS rule or a separate VLAN and the quality problems most offices blame on their provider disappear. Our test connection was a shared 100 Mbps line with no QoS, which is why the scores spread as they did.
Can I keep my existing number?
Yes. Porting is a legal right in the US and every provider here does it free. It took three to eleven business days in our test. Never cancel the old service before the port completes, or the number can be released and lost.
Why is my bill higher than the advertised price?
Federal Universal Service Fund contributions, E911 fees, state and local taxes and provider "regulatory recovery" charges are added on top, typically 10 to 20 percent. RingCentral and Vonage added the most in our quotes; Ooma and Google Voice the least. Ask for a full quote with fees before signing.
How do you test business phone systems?
Five seats run for two weeks on one 100 Mbps connection with no prioritisation. We record 40 calls per system — landline, mobile and VoIP-to-VoIP, some during deliberate network load — and score them blind for clarity, delay and dropouts. We port a real number, build the same auto-attendant and ring group, test voicemail transcription against the recording, and price the plan the setup required.
