What separates the top business phone with text messaging picks?

Seven services made the list, and the scores run from 8.6 down to 7.2. RingCentral sits on top at 8.6 for $20, with the highest blind call-quality score in the test and a 99.999% uptime commitment. Zoom Phone is a tenth behind at 8.5 for $15, and its $75 a month for five unlimited seats is the best price-to-quality ratio here. Nextiva matches RingCentral's $20 and lands at 8.4, with support that answered in under two minutes every time. Dialpad is 8.3 at $15, built around a live transcript accurate enough that testers stopped taking notes.

Below that, the trade-offs get sharper. 8x8 Work costs $24 and scores 7.8, but the entry tier includes unlimited calling to 14 countries. Ooma Office is 7.8 at $19.95, month-to-month with no contract. Grasshopper is 7.2 at $18, priced per account rather than per user, so five people share the $80 Small Business plan.

What should I check before buying?

Scoring weighted call quality and reliability at 30, features at 25, value at 20, setup and admin at 15, and integrations at 10. Read your own needs against that order.

  • Call recording: not on Nextiva's entry plan, needs the $25 Advanced plan on RingCentral, and is included on 8x8's X2 rather than upsold. Grasshopper has none.
  • Integrations: RingCentral connects to Salesforce, HubSpot, Microsoft 365, Google and Slack. Nextiva has fewer third-party integrations, and Ooma and Grasshopper have few.
  • Real bill: taxes and fees added about 18% to the RingCentral quote.
  • Setup: Ooma's base station and phones arrive pre-configured and worked in ten minutes. RingCentral's auto-attendant and ring groups took under twenty minutes.
  • Licences and SLAs: Zoom Phone needs a Zoom Workplace licence alongside the phone plan, and Dialpad's uptime SLA only applies on Pro and above.

RingCentral

For teams that want the highest call-quality score and integrations for nearly everything, and will pay $20 plus fees.

Zoom Phone

For teams already in Zoom every morning who want $75 a month for five unlimited seats and one-tap escalation to video.

Nextiva

For buyers who value support: a real person in under two minutes, and a stuck number port fixed same-day.

Dialpad

For sales and support calls where live transcription, coaching cards and sentiment analysis on Standard matter more than raw call quality.

8x8 Work

For businesses whose phone bill crosses borders, with unlimited calling to 14 countries at the entry tier.

Ooma Office

For a small office that just wants phones on desks: no contract, no early termination fee, working in ten minutes.

Grasshopper

For small teams that want a business number and auto-attendant over the phone they already carry, priced per account.

RingCentral suits teams that want the highest call-quality score and the deepest integrations, while Zoom Phone suits anyone already living in Zoom who wants five unlimited seats for $75 a month. Nextiva is the pick when support response matters, and Dialpad is for sales and support calls that need live transcription and coaching. If your calls cross borders, look at 8x8 Work; if you want no contract and phones working in ten minutes, Ooma Office; if you want a business number over the handset you already carry, Grasshopper.

Questions about best business phone services with texting

What internet speed does VoIP need?
About 100 kbps up and down per simultaneous call, so even five concurrent calls need only around half a megabit. Speed is rarely the problem; jitter and buffering are. Put voice traffic on a QoS rule or a separate VLAN and the quality problems most offices blame on their provider disappear. Our test connection was a shared 100 Mbps line with no QoS, which is why the scores spread as they did.
Can I keep my existing number?
Yes. Porting is a legal right in the US and every provider here does it free. It took three to eleven business days in our test. Never cancel the old service before the port completes, or the number can be released and lost.
Why is my bill higher than the advertised price?
Federal Universal Service Fund contributions, E911 fees, state and local taxes and provider "regulatory recovery" charges are added on top, typically 10 to 20 percent. RingCentral and Vonage added the most in our quotes; Ooma and Google Voice the least. Ask for a full quote with fees before signing.
How do you test business phone systems?
Five seats run for two weeks on one 100 Mbps connection with no prioritisation. We record 40 calls per system — landline, mobile and VoIP-to-VoIP, some during deliberate network load — and score them blind for clarity, delay and dropouts. We port a real number, build the same auto-attendant and ring group, test voicemail transcription against the recording, and price the plan the setup required.
