What problem does Mint Mobile solve, and who is it for?

Mint Mobile is the cheap way onto the fastest metro network in our test. The plan we tested is the 12-month Unlimited plan on T-Mobile's network, and the pitch is simple: buy a year up front and pay $15–$30 a month. That is the problem it solves — the monthly bill. If you live or work where T-Mobile covers you well, Mint gets you onto that network for less than the carrier charges directly.

The benefits we could confirm in testing are narrow but real. The $15 a month for 5 GB plan is the cheapest usable plan we tested. At our metro test points, Mint posted the fastest 5G speeds of the plans we ran. Family plans start at two lines, and there is a free trial eSIM so you can check coverage before committing. T-Mobile has owned Mint since 2024.

The catch is written into the model. The best prices require paying a year in advance, and the rural drives are where it lost to the Verizon-based plans. This is a plan for city dwellers who can prepay, not for someone who needs coverage on back roads.

How did we score Mint Mobile?

We scored Mint across five criteria for a total of 8.5 out of 10.

Value — 26 out of 30. We measured the monthly price for one line of unlimited with taxes and fees, and the multi-line price for four. Mint's one-line price is $30 a month and four lines come to $120 a month total, with the $15 tier sitting below that for 5 GB.

Coverage & network — 20 out of 25. This criterion covers which network you are on and measured signal at our 12 metro and two rural test points. Mint runs on T-Mobile, which carried our metro points but trailed on the rural drives.

Data & speed — 17 out of 20. We looked at median download speed across 30 days, the premium-data cap, and how hard the plan is deprioritised when the tower is busy. Mint's median download was 141 Mbps, with a 35 GB premium-data cap.

Perks & features — 13 out of 15. This covers hotspot allowance, international use, streaming bundles, phone deals, Wi-Fi calling and eSIM. Mint includes 10 GB of hotspot and free calls to Mexico and Canada with roaming credits.

Service — 9 out of 10. We timed minutes to reach support, judged app quality, and noted how easy it was to leave.

Where Mint Mobile stands out

The measured median download of 141 Mbps is the headline number. Across our 30-day test, Mint delivered the fastest 5G speeds at our metro points on T-Mobile's network, and it did so at a price below the carrier's own plans.

Against T-Mobile (8.8, $50), Mint is behind on score but ahead on price. T-Mobile's Essentials Saver is postpaid at $50 for one line and $100 a month total for four, with 50 GB of premium data, 3 GB of hotspot, and unlimited texting plus 2G data in 215+ countries. Mint gives you 35 GB of premium data and 10 GB of hotspot on the same network for $30 a month, but T-Mobile throws in better phone deals and perks on higher plans.

Against US Mobile (8.7, $25), Mint is behind on score and on flexibility. US Mobile lets you pick Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T and switch between them, with unlimited from $17.50 a month paid annually. Its Unlimited Starter is $25 for one line and $100 a month total for four, with 35 GB of premium data and 10 GB of hotspot — the same premium-data and hotspot figures as Mint, at a lower one-line price.

Against Visible (8.7, $25), Mint is behind on score and on hotspot. Visible runs on Verizon at $25 a month with taxes included, and its hotspot allowance is 999 GB. The base plan has no premium data and is deprioritised; Visible+ carries 50 GB. If hotspot volume matters more than metro speed, Visible wins that comparison.

Where Mint Mobile falls short

Coverage is the main loss. On our rural drives, Mint trailed the Verizon-based plans, and that is the single reason it did not score higher on coverage and network. If you travel outside metro areas regularly, the network choice works against you.

The pricing model is the second issue. The best prices require paying a year in advance, which means handing over a lump sum before you know how the service performs where you actually use it. Intro prices also rise at renewal, so the rate you sign up at is not the rate you keep.
