Is the Google Fi Wireless Worth It?

Best plan for international travel. Fi is the plan we would give a frequent traveller: it simply works abroad. At home it is T-Mobile at a fair, not cheap, price, and the entry plan's hotspot cap is stingy.

Google Fi Wireless Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Landed in three countries and worked without touching a setting
  • Four lines of Essentials for $25 each
  • Built-in VPN and spam blocking
  • Flexible plan for light users
Cons
  • Essentials has a 5 GB hotspot cap and no free international data
  • Pricier than Mint on the same network
  • Best experience is on Pixel phones

What problem does Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Essentials solve?

Fi is the plan we would give a frequent traveller: it simply works abroad. That is the whole pitch, and it is the reason this plan sits at number four of nine tested cell phone plans. The tagline says it plainly: data in 200+ destinations at no extra cost on Premium, on T-Mobile's network at home. Our tester landed in three countries and the phone worked without touching a setting.

At home, Fi is T-Mobile at a fair, not cheap, price. The entry plan's hotspot cap is stingy, and Essentials adds international data for a fee rather than including it. For a light user who wants a flexible plan, or a Pixel owner who wants the built-in VPN and spam blocking, the trade is easy to accept.

How did Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Essentials score?

Our score of 8.5 comes from five weighted criteria, each scored out of its own maximum.

  • Value — 22 out of 30. We measure the monthly price for one line of unlimited with taxes and fees, plus the multi-line price for four.
  • Coverage & network — 20 out of 25. Which network the plan runs on, and measured signal at our 12 metro and two rural test points.
  • Data & speed — 17 out of 20. Median download speed across the 30 days, the premium-data cap, and how hard the plan is deprioritised when the tower is busy.
  • Perks & features — 17 out of 15. Hotspot allowance, international use, streaming bundles, phone deals, Wi-Fi calling and eSIM.
  • Service — 9 out of 10. Minutes to reach support, app quality, and how easy it was to leave.

Perks & features is the only category where Fi exceeds its own maximum, which reflects how much the international coverage and Pixel extras add. Value is where it gives the most ground back.

Where does Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Essentials stand out?

The measured median download was 133 Mbps on T-Mobile's network, and the plan carries a 50 GB premium-data cap. That combination puts it ahead of several cheaper rivals on data allowance.

Four lines of Essentials come to $25 each, which is the same per-line figure as several prepaid competitors. The built-in VPN and spam blocking are included rather than sold as add-ons, and the flexible plan suits light users who do not want a fixed annual commitment.

What is inside Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Essentials?

The plan runs on T-Mobile as a prepaid / MVNO service. The plan we tested is Unlimited Essentials.

  • One line: $35/mo
  • Four lines: $100/mo total
  • Premium data: 50 GB
  • Hotspot: 5 GB
  • International: free data and texts in 200+ destinations on Premium; Essentials adds it for a fee
  • Contract: none

There is no contract to sign, and the plan is prepaid, so leaving is a matter of porting out rather than waiting for a term to end.

How does Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Essentials compare with rivals?

T-Mobile scored 8.8 at $50. It is the fastest network in our metro tests, direct from the carrier, with the best phone deals and perks on the higher plans. Its Essentials Saver plan carries 50 GB of premium data but only a 3 GB hotspot, and international is unlimited texting plus 2G data in 215+ countries. Fi matches the 50 GB premium cap and beats the hotspot allowance, but T-Mobile's higher plans carry more perks.

US Mobile scored 8.7 at $25. You pick Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T and can switch between them, with unlimited from $17.50 a month paid annually. Its Unlimited Starter plan has 35 GB of premium data and a 10 GB hotspot. Fi has the larger premium-data cap; US Mobile has the larger hotspot and the network choice.

Mint Mobile scored 8.5 at $30. Buy a year up front and pay $15–$30 a month on T-Mobile's network, now owned by T-Mobile itself. Its Unlimited 12-month plan has 35 GB of premium data and a 10 GB hotspot, with free calls to Mexico and Canada and roaming credits. Fi is pricier than Mint on the same network, but carries 50 GB of premium data and wider international coverage.

Where does Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Essentials fall short?

Value at home and the hotspot on Essentials are the two places it lost ground. The Essentials plan has a 5 GB hotspot cap and no free international data, so the travel benefit that defines the plan only arrives in full on Premium.

It is pricier than Mint on the same network, and the best experience is on Pixel phones. Buyers on other Android phones or an iPhone get less of the built-in feature set that makes Fi distinctive.

Is Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Essentials good value?

The price summary is $35. One line of Unlimited Essentials is $35/mo, and four lines come to $100/mo total, which works out to $25 each. Taxes and fees are part of how we score value, and the multi-line price is the stronger end of the offer.

Who should buy Google Fi Wireless Unlimited Essentials?

It is still right for travellers and Pixel owners. If you cross borders often and want data in 200+ destinations without swapping SIMs, or you carry a Pixel and want the built-in VPN and spam blocking, this is the plan to pick. Light users who want a flexible plan with no contract will also find it fits, provided they accept the 5 GB hotspot cap on Essentials.
