Is the Proton Pass Worth It?

Best for email aliases and privacy. Proton Pass has caught up fast: it is open, audited and generous, and its aliases are a privacy feature nobody else bundles. It is a year or two behind 1Password on the details of daily use.

Proton Pass Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Hide-my-email aliases generated at sign-up
  • Open source, audited, Swiss jurisdiction
  • Free tier has no device or password limit
  • Included with Proton Unlimited if you already pay for Mail or VPN
Cons
  • Youngest product here; fewer features than 1Password
  • Autofill missed some in-app logins on Android
  • Item organisation is basic

What problem does Proton Pass solve, and who is it for?

Proton Pass is ranked third of seven password managers we tested, with a score of 9 out of 10. It is best for email aliases and privacy, and it is still the right pick for Proton users and privacy-first buyers. The problem it solves is the one every password manager solves — remembering and filling logins — plus a second one most rivals ignore: handing a different email address to every site so your real inbox stays out of marketing lists and breach dumps. Its verdict is that it has caught up fast: open, audited and generous, with aliases nobody else bundles, though it is a year or two behind 1Password on the details of daily use.

How did we score Proton Pass?

We scored it across five criteria. Security earned 33 of 35 points, measured on zero-knowledge architecture, encryption, independent audits, breach history, two-factor and passkey support. Usability earned 20 of 25, measured on autofill accuracy across our 150 logins in browsers and apps, capture of new logins, and setup time. Features earned 14 of 15, covering sharing, secure notes, passkeys, breach alerts, emergency access, travel mode and item history. Platforms earned 9 of 10, for apps and extensions on every OS and browser we use and how consistent they are. Value earned 14 of 15, judged on price per year for one person and a family, and what the free tier gives.

What are the standout strengths of Proton Pass?

The headline strength is hide-my-email aliases generated at sign-up, so a new account never sees your real address. It is open source, audited and under Swiss jurisdiction, and the latest audit is a public Cure53 report from 2024. In our measured testing, autofill succeeded on 90% of logins. The free tier has no device or password limit, and the product is included with Proton Unlimited if you already pay for Mail or VPN.

How does the technology behind Proton Pass work?

Zero-knowledge means your vault is encrypted on your device before it reaches the server, and the key needed to read it is derived from your password, so the provider stores data it cannot decrypt. An email alias is a forwarding address: the site sees the alias, and mail sent to it is relayed to your real inbox, so you can switch an alias off if it starts attracting spam. Passkeys replace the password with a cryptographic key pair held on your device; the site keeps only the public half.

What do you get, and how is it built?

The individual plan is 23.88 USD/yr and the family plan is 47.88 USD/yr for 6 members. The free tier is unlimited, with no device or password limit. It is open source, audited by Cure53 in a public report, supports passkeys, and has no breach history. Apps and extensions cover Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and all browsers.

How does Proton Pass compare with its rivals?

1Password scored 9.3 and costs $35.88, with a family plan at 59.88 USD/yr for 5 members, no free tier, and no breach on record; it is not open source, though its clients are partly. Bitwarden scored 9.2 at $10, with a family plan at 40 USD/yr for 6 members, an unlimited free tier, open source code and annual public audits including Cure53. NordPass scored 8.9 at $17.88, with a family plan at 35.88 USD/yr for 6 members, a free tier limited to one active device, and no open source. Proton Pass sits above NordPass on score and below 1Password and Bitwarden, while bundling aliases that none of the three match.

Across the shared labels, Proton Pass matches the field on passkeys, no breach history and broad platform coverage. It is one of three open-source options here alongside Bitwarden, and its Cure53 audit is public like Bitwarden's and NordPass's. Its free tier is unlimited, as is Bitwarden's, while NordPass limits free users to one active device and 1Password offers no free tier. Its family plan covers 6 members, matching Bitwarden and NordPass.

Where does Proton Pass fall short?

It lost on usability and features against 1Password. It is the youngest product here and has fewer features than 1Password. Autofill missed some in-app logins on Android in our testing, and item organisation is basic.

Is Proton Pass good value?

It costs $23.88 for an individual plan, and the value criterion scored 14 of 15. The free tier is unlimited, with no device or password limit, and the product is included with Proton Unlimited if you already pay for Mail or VPN.

Who should buy Proton Pass?

It is still the right choice for Proton users and privacy-first buyers. If you already pay for Proton Mail or Proton VPN, the inclusion in Proton Unlimited makes it an easy addition, and the alias feature gives you a reason to use it even if you keep another manager for daily filling.
