What separates the best password manager with passkeys on this page?

Seven managers made the cut, and the scores run from 9.3 down to 8.4. The gap at the top is small, but the reasons differ.

1Password scores 9.3 and costs $35.88. It filled 97% of our 150 logins first time, the best in the test, and its Secret Key means a stolen vault is useless without your device. No free tier, and it is not fully open source.

Bitwarden scores 9.2 at $10 a year. The free tier syncs unlimited passwords across unlimited devices, and it is fully open source with annual third-party audits. Autofill fumbled more logins than 1Password — 91% — and the interface is functional rather than refined.

Proton Pass scores 9.0 at $23.88, with hide-my-email aliases generated at sign-up and a free tier with no device or password limit. It is the youngest product here, and autofill missed some in-app logins on Android.

NordPass scores 8.9 at $17.88, or $1.49 a month on the 2-year plan, with autofill at 94%. Its free tier allows one device logged in at a time.

Apple Passwords is free and scores 8.6, with passkeys and Face ID sign-in. Android has no app, and Windows support is limited to iCloud for Windows and Chrome.

Dashlane scores 8.5 at $59.88, the most expensive individual plan here, bundling dark-web monitoring and Hotspot Shield VPN. Keeper scores 8.4 at $39.99, with SOC 2 and FedRAMP certifications, but breach monitoring, file storage and messaging are paid add-ons.

What should you check before buying?

Scoring weights security at 35, usability at 25, features at 15, platforms at 10 and value at 15. Match those to your own habits.

  • Autofill rate: 1Password hit 97%, Bitwarden 91%, NordPass 94%. If you log in dozens of times a day, that gap shows up.
  • Free tier limits: Bitwarden and Proton Pass have no device or password limit; NordPass allows one device logged in at a time.
  • Platforms: Apple Passwords has no Android app and limited Windows support.
  • Price: from Free to $59.88 a year. Keeper's family plan is the most expensive here.
  • Add-ons: Keeper charges extra for breach monitoring, file storage and messaging.

Which one for whom?

1Password suits anyone who wants the most polished manager on every platform and will pay $35.88. Bitwarden suits security-minded users who want open source and a $10 premium. Proton Pass suits people who want email aliases and a free tier without limits. NordPass suits budget buyers on the 2-year deal. Apple Passwords suits all-Apple households. Dashlane suits those who want automation and a bundled VPN. Keeper suits buyers who need corporate certifications.

For most people, 1Password at 9.3 is the pick if autofill reliability matters most, while Bitwarden at 9.2 covers open-source fans for $10 a year. Proton Pass suits anyone who wants email aliases and a free tier without device limits, and Apple Passwords is the free choice for all-Apple households. Dashlane and Keeper fit buyers who want bundled extras or corporate certifications and will pay for them.

Questions about best password managers for passkeys

Are password managers safe after the LastPass breach?
Yes, with caveats the LastPass incident taught. Choose one with zero-knowledge encryption, a strong default KDF (Argon2 or high-iteration PBKDF2), recent public audits and a clean breach record — 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass and NordPass all meet that. Use a long master passphrase and turn on two-factor.
Is the free one good enough?
Bitwarden's free tier is a complete, unlimited password manager that syncs across all your devices; Proton Pass free is close behind. Apple Passwords is free and excellent if every device you own is Apple. Paid tiers add sharing, breach reports, file attachments and family vaults.
What are passkeys and do I need them?
Passkeys replace passwords with a cryptographic key stored on your device or in your password manager; they cannot be phished. Every manager here can store and sync passkeys now. You do not need to do anything; when a site offers "sign in with a passkey", accept and let the manager save it.
How do you test password managers?
The same 150-login vault is imported into each. We use it for two weeks on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Chrome, Safari and Firefox, counting every login the manager filled correctly, captured on sign-up, or fumbled. We read the security white paper, the latest audit report and the breach record, and price the individual and family plans.
