NordPass is the easiest to like of the paid managers: quick, clean and cheap on the long plan. It is not open source and the free tier is limited, which is where Bitwarden and Proton pull ahead. For anyone juggling dozens of logins, it puts every password behind one vault, then watches for the ones that leak. The breach scanner is the part most people feel first: it checks your saved logins against known leaks and flags the ones that need changing.

Beyond that, the app handles password health, breach scanning and email masking, and it supports passkeys across platforms. On the 2-year plan it costs $1.49 a month, which is the cheapest premium plan here. The trade-offs are real: the free tier allows one device logged in at a time, the code is not open source, and the price rises at renewal after the 2-year term.

Where does NordPass stand out?

The measured results back up the feel of the app. Autofill succeeded on 94% of our logins, and the latest audit is from 2024, carried out by Cure53 and public. The password generator and user status screen show how little friction there is once you are inside.

How does the encryption work?

NordPass uses XChaCha20 encryption. In plain terms, XChaCha20 is a stream cipher that turns your data into unreadable output using a key derived from your master password, and it is designed to run fast in software without special hardware. The vault is zero-knowledge, so the key stays with you. Passkeys are supported too: instead of a password, your device holds a cryptographic key and signs you in, so there is nothing to type or reuse. The 2024 Cure53 audit is public.

Apple Passwords scored 8.6 and is free, end-to-end encrypted, with native passkeys and shared groups, but it is limited to iOS, iPadOS, macOS and visionOS, with Windows via iCloud and a Chrome extension. NordPass runs on more platforms and costs $17.88 a year.
