Are password managers safe after the LastPass breach?
Yes, with caveats the LastPass incident taught. Choose one with zero-knowledge encryption, a strong default KDF (Argon2 or high-iteration PBKDF2), recent public audits and a clean breach record — 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass and NordPass all meet that. Use a long master passphrase and turn on two-factor.
Is the free one good enough?
Bitwarden's free tier is a complete, unlimited password manager that syncs across all your devices; Proton Pass free is close behind. Apple Passwords is free and excellent if every device you own is Apple. Paid tiers add sharing, breach reports, file attachments and family vaults.
What are passkeys and do I need them?
Passkeys replace passwords with a cryptographic key stored on your device or in your password manager; they cannot be phished. Every manager here can store and sync passkeys now. You do not need to do anything; when a site offers "sign in with a passkey", accept and let the manager save it.
How do you test password managers?
The same 150-login vault is imported into each. We use it for two weeks on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, Chrome, Safari and Firefox, counting every login the manager filled correctly, captured on sign-up, or fumbled. We read the security white paper, the latest audit report and the breach record, and price the individual and family plans.
