Frequently asked questions about online tutoring services
How much does online tutoring cost?
From about $10 an hour for a language tutor on Preply or italki to $70–100 an hour for a vetted academic tutor on Wyzant or Varsity Tutors. Kids' English platforms like Novakid charge $10–20 per 25-minute lesson. Subscriptions (Cambly, Varsity Tutors memberships) cost less per hour only if you use them.
Are online tutors background-checked?
It depends. Novakid, Outschool, Varsity Tutors and Tutor.com run background checks on everyone who teaches; Wyzant checks identity and offers optional background checks shown on profiles; Preply and Cambly verify identity and rely on reviews. For a child, choose a platform that checks everyone and stay in the room.
Marketplace or managed service?
Marketplaces (Preply, Wyzant) let you pick the tutor and pay per lesson — cheapest and most flexible, but quality varies and you do the choosing. Managed services (Varsity Tutors, Tutor.com, Novakid) vet, match and structure the lessons for more money and less choice. Our best lessons came from both kinds; our worst came from marketplaces where we picked badly.
How do you test tutoring platforms?
Three learners each take five paid lessons on every platform. We record how tutors are vetted, how long it takes to book a first lesson, the quality of the five tutors we got, how the built-in classroom works, what the platform charged versus what it advertised, and how rescheduling and refunds went when we tested them.
