What separates the best online tutoring for kids?

Five services made the cut, and the scores sit close together: Novakid at 8.3, Wyzant at 8.2, Tutor.com and Outschool both at 8, and Varsity Tutors at 7.6. The split is really about format and price, not quality.

Novakid runs gamified 25-minute English lessons for four- to twelve-year-olds with certified, background-checked teachers. Our nine-year-old asked for the next lesson, which no other platform managed. The trade-off: English only, and the short lessons work out to $30–45 per hour equivalent.

Wyzant is a marketplace of 65,000 tutors across 300 subjects, pay by the hour with no subscription. Our algebra learner's tutor diagnosed the gap in ten minutes. Most tutors charge $35–75 an hour, and background checks are optional.

Tutor.com connects you to a vetted tutor in minutes, any hour. We reached a chemistry tutor in four minutes at 10 pm. You get a different tutor each time, and hourly subscriptions expire monthly.

Outschool sells small live classes from $10–20 a session. Our tenth-grader joined a four-student algebra group at $16 a session. Group format means less individual attention.

Varsity Tutors matches you to a vetted tutor and wraps it in live classes, diagnostics and practice tests. The SAT specialist raised our practice score 60 points in five sessions. Pricing is only revealed on a sales call, and it is the most expensive per hour here.

What should you check before buying?

Vetting carries the most weight in our scoring (30 points), so confirm every teacher is background-checked. Novakid, Tutor.com, Outschool and Varsity Tutors all check everyone; Wyzant leaves it optional.

Then look at price transparency and policies (15 points). Wyzant charges per lesson after it happens. Tutor.com subscriptions expire monthly. Varsity Tutors auto-renews memberships and quotes only on a call.

  • Matching and scheduling (20 points): do you keep the same tutor, or get whoever is free?
  • Lesson platform (15 points): does it hold your child's attention for the full session?
  • Value (20 points): compare the real hourly cost, not the headline rate.

Questions about best online tutoring for kids

How much does online tutoring cost?
From about $10 an hour for a language tutor on Preply or italki to $70–100 an hour for a vetted academic tutor on Wyzant or Varsity Tutors. Kids' English platforms like Novakid charge $10–20 per 25-minute lesson. Subscriptions (Cambly, Varsity Tutors memberships) cost less per hour only if you use them.
Are online tutors background-checked?
It depends. Novakid, Outschool, Varsity Tutors and Tutor.com run background checks on everyone who teaches; Wyzant checks identity and offers optional background checks shown on profiles; Preply and Cambly verify identity and rely on reviews. For a child, choose a platform that checks everyone and stay in the room.
Marketplace or managed service?
Marketplaces (Preply, Wyzant) let you pick the tutor and pay per lesson — cheapest and most flexible, but quality varies and you do the choosing. Managed services (Varsity Tutors, Tutor.com, Novakid) vet, match and structure the lessons for more money and less choice. Our best lessons came from both kinds; our worst came from marketplaces where we picked badly.
How do you test tutoring platforms?
Three learners each take five paid lessons on every platform. We record how tutors are vetted, how long it takes to book a first lesson, the quality of the five tutors we got, how the built-in classroom works, what the platform charged versus what it advertised, and how rescheduling and refunds went when we tested them.
