Is the Varsity Tutors Worth It?

Best managed tutoring. Varsity Tutors delivered the strongest academic result in our test, and it does the choosing for you. Its opaque, call-us pricing and auto-renewing memberships cost it the policies score.

Varsity Tutors Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Rigorous vetting, everyone checked
  • Live classes, diagnostics and practice tests included in memberships
  • Recorded sessions
Cons
  • Pricing is only revealed on a sales call; memberships auto-renew
  • The most expensive per hour here
  • Sales follow-up is persistent

What problem does Varsity Tutors solve?

Varsity Tutors is a managed tutoring service. You do not browse tutor profiles and pick one yourself; the company matches you to a tutor it has already vetted, then wraps the lessons in live classes, diagnostics and practice tests. That matters most for test prep and for families who want a managed programme rather than a marketplace to shop in.

The result in our test was the strongest academic outcome of the seven services we booked. Our SAT specialist raised our practice score 60 points in five sessions. Vetting is rigorous and everyone is checked. Live classes, diagnostics and practice tests are included in memberships, and sessions are recorded.

The trade-off is on the buying side. Pricing is only revealed on a sales call, memberships auto-renew, and it was the most expensive per hour in this test. Sales follow-up is persistent.

How did Varsity Tutors score?

We scored it across five criteria for a total of 7.6 out of 10.

  • Tutor quality & vetting: 26 out of 30. This criterion covers background checks, credential verification, interview or demo requirements, and how our fifteen booked tutors actually taught.
  • Matching & scheduling: 18 out of 20. Search filters, trial lessons, time to first lesson, rescheduling and cancellation rules.
  • Lesson platform: 14 out of 15. Built-in video classroom, whiteboard, materials, homework and progress reports for parents.
  • Price transparency & policies: 8 out of 15. Whether the price you see is the price you pay, refund rules and subscription traps.
  • Value: 10 out of 20. Cost per hour of live instruction for our three learners.

The pattern is clear: the teaching and the platform carried the score, while the pricing and policy criteria pulled it down.

Where Varsity Tutors stood out

Three measured results separate it from the rest of the field.

First, the academic gain. The SAT specialist we were matched with raised our practice score 60 points in five sessions, the best-matched tutor in the test.

Second, vetting. Tutors go through a background check, credential verification and an interview, and 1 in 10 is accepted. That is a full vetting process, and it is the reason the matching criterion scored 18 out of 20.

Third, speed. Time to first lesson was 30 hours.

Memberships also include live classes, diagnostics and practice tests, and sessions are recorded so a student can go back over them.

What you actually get

The specification rows describe the service as sold.

  • Typical price: $70–100/hr; memberships from about $200/mo
  • Pricing model: Subscription
  • Subjects: Academic K–12 and college, test prep, languages
  • For children: Yes
  • Tutor vetting: Background check, credential verification, interview; 1 in 10 accepted
  • Trial: None; satisfaction guarantee on first session
  • Classroom: Own live learning platform with recordings
  • Cancellation: Memberships auto-renew; cancellation by phone

There is no free trial. The safety net is a satisfaction guarantee on the first session, and cancelling means a phone call.

How it compares with other tutoring services

Against Preply (8.4), Varsity Tutors is ahead on vetting and on the managed matching, and behind on price. Preply tutors typically run $10–40/hr and we paid $18/hr on a subscription, with identity verification and profile approval rather than a full credential and interview process. Preply offers a paid trial that is replaced free if you are unhappy, and rescheduling with 12 hours' notice.

Against Novakid (8.3), the split is subject coverage. Novakid teaches English as a second language to four- to twelve-year-olds only, at $12–22 per 25-minute lesson, with a teaching certificate, background check and demo lesson, a free trial, and a gamified classroom with AR and rewards. Varsity Tutors covers academic K–12 and college, test prep and languages, but has no free trial.

Against Wyzant (8.2), the difference is the model. Wyzant is a marketplace of 65,000 tutors in 300 subjects at $35–75/hr, and we paid $55, per hour with no subscription. Its vetting is an identity check with an optional background check shown on the profile, plus reviews, and it backs the first hour with a Good Fit Guarantee. Varsity Tutors vets harder and manages the match, but costs more and locks you into a membership.

Against Outschool (8.0), Varsity Tutors is the one-to-one option. Outschool runs small live group classes at $10–25 per session, with 1-on-1 at $30–60/hr, for ages 3–18, with no trial and a 24-hour cancellation window.

Against Tutor.com (8.0), the contrast is on-demand homework help versus a programme. Tutor.com is $39.99/mo for 1 hour and is often free through libraries, with background checks, subject exams and mock sessions, no trial, and hours that do not roll over.

Where Varsity Tutors falls short

Price transparency is where it lost. The price is only revealed on a sales call, and memberships auto-renew. Cancellation is by phone, which is the least convenient route in this comparison.

It was also the most expensive per hour here, and sales follow-up is persistent. There is no free trial, only a satisfaction guarantee on the first session.

Is Varsity Tutors worth the price?

Our price summary is $75 per hour. The published range is $70–100/hr, with memberships from about $200/mo on a subscription model.

That $75 per hour is what we measured across our lessons, and it is the highest per-hour figure in this test. Value scored 10 out of 20 on cost per hour of live instruction for our three learners, and price transparency and policies scored 8 out of 15.

What you are paying for is the managed layer: the vetting, the matching, the included live classes, diagnostics and practice tests, and the recordings. If you would rather choose and pay a tutor directly, the marketplaces cost less per hour.

Who should buy Varsity Tutors?

It is still right for test prep and families who want a managed programme. If you want the service to pick the tutor, hold the tutor to a vetting standard of 1 in 10 accepted, and give you classes, diagnostics and practice tests alongside the lessons, this is the one that produced the strongest academic result in our test.

If price transparency matters more to you than the managed layer, look at the per-hour marketplaces instead. The 7.6 score reflects exactly that split: strong teaching and platform, weak pricing and policies.
