What problem does Preply solve, and who is it for?
Preply is a marketplace for learning a language with a real person, and it is the widest, cheapest and best-equipped option in our test of seven online tutoring services. The problem it solves is finding a live tutor at a price you can control: typical rates run $10–40/hr, and our own Spanish learner paid $18/hr. It suits adults and teens learning a language, and it also lists maths, science and business skills, though languages come first.
The part to understand before you buy is the subscription. Lessons are bought as a weekly subscription, and unused lessons expire unless you reschedule. If that fits how you study, the rest of the package — filters, built-in courses, a free tutor swap after the trial — is what earned it the number one spot in this category.
How did we score Preply?
We scored Preply across five criteria for a total of 8.4 out of 10.
- Tutor quality & vetting — 24/30. We looked at background checks, credential verification, interview or demo requirements, and how our fifteen booked tutors actually taught.
- Matching & scheduling — 18/20. This covers search filters, trial lessons, time to first lesson, rescheduling and cancellation rules.
- Lesson platform — 13/15. The built-in video classroom, whiteboard, materials, homework and progress reports for parents.
- Price transparency & policies — 11/15. Whether the price you see is the price you pay, refund rules and subscription traps.
- Value — 18/20. Cost per hour of live instruction for our three learners.
The two lowest scores are the two things to weigh up: vetting is lighter than a managed service, and the subscription model costs points on transparency.
What does Preply do best?
The standout result from our test was the teaching itself. Our Spanish learner's tutor, booked at $18/hr, delivered the best language lesson in the whole test. That is a single tutor rather than a guarantee, but it shows what the marketplace can surface when the filters are used well.
Those filters are the second strength: you can narrow tutors by price, country, availability and specialty. Scheduling is quick — we reached our first lesson in 4 hours. Between lessons there are built-in courses and exercises, so the learning does not stop when the call ends. And if the trial tutor is wrong, the paid trial is replaced free.
What are the parts, and how is it built?
The eight specification rows describe the whole product:
- Typical price: $10–40/hr typical; we paid $18/hr.
- Pricing model: Subscription.
- Subjects: Languages first; also maths, science, business skills.
- For children: Yes, kids' filter.
- Tutor vetting: Identity verification, profile approval; reviews.
- Trial: Paid trial, replaced free if unhappy.
- Classroom: Built-in video with courses and homework.
- Cancellation: Reschedule with 12 hours' notice; subscription renews monthly.
In short: a marketplace of tutors, a video classroom with materials, and a monthly subscription that renews until you stop it.
How does Preply compare with the other services we tested?
Against Novakid (8.3), Preply scores slightly higher and covers far more subjects and ages. Novakid is English as a second language only, for four- to twelve-year-olds, at $12–22 per 25-minute lesson, with a free trial and a gamified classroom. Preply's trial is paid, but it is replaced free if unhappy, and its tutors teach languages beyond English.
Against Wyzant (8.2), Preply is cheaper in our test — $18/hr versus the $55/hr we paid Wyzant — and its classroom includes courses and homework. Wyzant counters with 65,000 tutors in 300 subjects, pay-by-the-hour with no subscription, and a Good Fit Guarantee that refunds the first hour if it is not a fit. If you want academic depth and no subscription, Wyzant is the stronger shape.
Against Outschool (8.0), Preply is built around one-to-one language teaching, while Outschool sells small live group classes from $10–25 per session, with one-to-one at $30–60/hr. Outschool has no trial and is for ages three to eighteen only.
Against Tutor.com (8.0), Preply is more flexible on subjects and tutor choice. Tutor.com is a $39.99/mo subscription for one hour, often free via libraries, aimed at homework help, with no trial and hours that do not roll over.
Against Varsity Tutors (7.6), Preply is far cheaper and self-directed. Varsity Tutors is a managed service at $70–100/hr, with memberships from about $200/mo, a satisfaction guarantee on the first session, and cancellation by phone.

Feature comparison across the tested services
Reading the shared spec labels side by side shows where Preply sits. On price, Preply's $10–40/hr typical range undercuts Wyzant at $35–75/hr and Varsity Tutors at $70–100/hr, and sits above Novakid's $12–22 per 25-minute lesson. On pricing model, Preply, Tutor.com and Varsity Tutors use subscriptions; Novakid, Wyzant and Outschool charge per lesson or per hour. On subjects, Preply leads with languages and adds maths, science and business skills, while Wyzant lists 300+ academic, test prep, languages and music, and Novakid covers English as a second language only. On vetting, Preply uses identity verification, profile approval and reviews — lighter than Novakid's teaching certificate, background check and demo lesson, or Varsity Tutors' interview and 1-in-10 acceptance. On trial, Preply's paid trial is replaced free if unhappy; Novakid's is free, Wyzant offers its Good Fit Guarantee, and Outschool, Tutor.com and Varsity Tutors offer none. On classroom, Preply has built-in video with courses and homework; Novakid has a gamified classroom with AR and rewards; Wyzant has video with whiteboard and code editor. On cancellation, Preply needs 12 hours' notice, Wyzant and Outschool 24 hours, and Novakid 8 hours.
Where does Preply fall short?
The subscription is the main drawback. Lessons are bought as a weekly subscription, and unused lessons expire unless you reschedule. Rescheduling needs 12 hours' notice, and the subscription renews monthly, so the cost continues if you forget it.
Tutor quality varies. We read a lot of profiles before booking, and the vetting is identity verification, profile approval and reviews rather than a teaching certificate or demo lesson. Academic subjects are also thinner than languages, so it is a weaker choice for maths or science than for Spanish or French.
Is Preply good value?
At $18/hr for our lessons, within a typical $10–40/hr range, Preply is the cheapest way we tested to get live one-to-one language instruction. Value scored 18/20, and price transparency scored 11/15 — the subscription is what holds that second number down. You are paying marketplace prices rather than managed-service prices, and the free replacement trial limits the risk of a bad first match.
Who should buy Preply?
Adults and teens learning a language. If you want a real person, a rate you choose, filters by price, country, availability and specialty, and courses to work through between lessons, Preply is the widest and cheapest option in this test. If you need academic depth, no subscription, or a managed service that matches you, look at Wyzant or Varsity Tutors instead.
