What separates the picks on this affordable online tutoring list?

Three services made the cut, and the scores sit close together: Preply at 8.4, Novakid at 8.3, Outschool at 8.0. The differences show up in who the lesson is for and how you pay.

Preply starts at $18 an hour and covers the widest ground — language tutors, filters by price, country, availability and specialty, plus built-in courses between lessons. Our Spanish learner's tutor at $18/hr was the best language lesson in the whole test. The catch: lessons are bought as a weekly subscription, and unused lessons expire unless you reschedule. Tutor quality also varies, so profile reading is part of the job.

Novakid is the narrowest and the most structured: gamified 25-minute English lessons for four- to twelve-year-olds, certified and background-checked teachers, a curriculum mapped to CEFR levels and parent progress reports. Our nine-year-old asked for the next lesson — the only platform where that happened. It is English only, and the 25-minute format works out to $30–45 per hour equivalent.

Outschool runs small live classes on anything from algebra to Minecraft coding, $10–20 a session, every teacher background-checked. Our tenth-grader joined a four-student algebra group at $16 a session. The group format means less individual attention, and class quality depends on the teacher.

What should you check before buying affordable online tutoring?

Price per hour is only part of it. The scoring criteria weight tutor quality and vetting at 30, matching and scheduling at 20, lesson platform at 15, price transparency and policies at 15, and value at 20.

  • Vetting: Novakid and Outschool certify and background-check every teacher. On Preply, quality varies, so read profiles and use the free replacement trial if the first lesson is wrong.
  • Scheduling and expiry: Preply's weekly subscription means unused lessons expire unless you reschedule. Check the cancellation rules before you commit.
  • Format: 25-minute Novakid lessons suit young children. Outschool's group classes cost less per session but spread the teacher's attention.
  • Subject: Novakid teaches English only. Preply and Outschool cover far more.

Questions about most affordable online tutoring

How much does online tutoring cost?
From about $10 an hour for a language tutor on Preply or italki to $70–100 an hour for a vetted academic tutor on Wyzant or Varsity Tutors. Kids' English platforms like Novakid charge $10–20 per 25-minute lesson. Subscriptions (Cambly, Varsity Tutors memberships) cost less per hour only if you use them.
Are online tutors background-checked?
It depends. Novakid, Outschool, Varsity Tutors and Tutor.com run background checks on everyone who teaches; Wyzant checks identity and offers optional background checks shown on profiles; Preply and Cambly verify identity and rely on reviews. For a child, choose a platform that checks everyone and stay in the room.
Marketplace or managed service?
Marketplaces (Preply, Wyzant) let you pick the tutor and pay per lesson — cheapest and most flexible, but quality varies and you do the choosing. Managed services (Varsity Tutors, Tutor.com, Novakid) vet, match and structure the lessons for more money and less choice. Our best lessons came from both kinds; our worst came from marketplaces where we picked badly.
How do you test tutoring platforms?
Three learners each take five paid lessons on every platform. We record how tutors are vetted, how long it takes to book a first lesson, the quality of the five tutors we got, how the built-in classroom works, what the platform charged versus what it advertised, and how rescheduling and refunds went when we tested them.
