beehiiv (Scale) review 2027
A newsletter platform with its own ad network, referral programme, paid subscriptions and a website — for growing a publication, not running a store
Is the beehiiv Worth It?
Best for growing a newsletter. beehiiv is the platform for a newsletter that wants to become a media business, and its growth tools are unique. Deliverability trailed the field in our test.
beehiiv Pros & Cons
- Referral programme and Boosts grew our test list from other newsletters
- Ad network pays publishers per send
- Free to 2,500; $39 to 10,000
- Website and archive included
- 92% inbox placement — Yahoo landed several in spam
- Automation is basic
- Not built for businesses that are not publications
What problem does beehiiv solve, and who is it for?
beehiiv is built for newsletter publishers, and its growth tools are the reason it exists. The referral programme and Boosts grew our test list from other newsletters, and the ad network pays publishers per send. A website and archive are included, so a publication can live on the platform rather than beside it. Paid subscriptions and an ad network sit in the spec sheet under eCommerce, which is an unusual place to find them and the clearest sign of who this is for: people turning a newsletter into a media business, not a store.
The verdict is narrow on purpose. beehiiv is the platform for a newsletter that wants to become a media business, and its growth tools are unique. It is still right for newsletter publishers focused on growth and ads. It is not built for businesses that are not publications.
How did we score beehiiv?
We scored five criteria out of a possible 100 points.
- Deliverability, 22 of 25: inbox placement of our four campaigns across 40 seed addresses at Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo and iCloud, plus authentication setup help.
- Editor & automation, 17 of 25: email editor quality, templates, and how far the automation builder went with our welcome, cart-abandon and re-engagement flows.
- Segmentation & data, 12 of 15: segments, tags, custom fields, ecommerce data and reporting depth.
- Ease of use, 14 of 15: time for a first campaign, and how much the interface fought back.
- Value, 17 of 20: monthly price at 5,000 contacts with automation, and the free tier.
That adds up to 8.2 overall, fifth of the seven platforms we tested in this category.
Where beehiiv stands out
The growth machinery is the standout. The referral programme and Boosts grew our test list from other newsletters, which is a different mechanism from the usual forms and pop-ups. The ad network pays publishers per send, so a list can earn before a sponsor deal is negotiated. A full website and archive are included, and the free tier runs to 2,500 subscribers before the $39 monthly price at 5,000 contacts applies.
Ease of use scored 14 of 15, the strongest single result in the breakdown. Our first campaign came together quickly and the interface did not fight back.
What you get: parts, specs and build
The spec sheet reads like a publishing stack rather than a marketing one.
- Price at 5,000 contacts: 39 USD/mo
- Free plan: Yes, 2,500 subscribers
- Automation: Basic journeys on Scale
- eCommerce: Paid subscriptions and ad network
- Landing pages / forms: Full website
- SMS: No
- Inbox placement (our test): 92 %
- Best for: Newsletter publishers
There is no SMS, and automation is limited to basic journeys on the Scale plan. The ecommerce row is really a monetisation row: paid subscriptions and the ad network.
How beehiiv compares with the platforms we tested
MailerLite scored 9 and costs $39 at 5,000 contacts, the same price as beehiiv. It reached 97 % inbox placement in our test, offers multi-trigger workflows, Shopify and WooCommerce, landing pages and sites, and a free plan for 1,000 subscribers. It has no SMS. For a small business or creator, MailerLite is ahead on deliverability and automation at the same monthly cost.
Kit scored 8.3 and costs $79 at 5,000 contacts. Its free Newsletter plan covers 10,000 subscribers, it has a visual automation builder, native sales of digital products and subscriptions, landing pages, and 96 % inbox placement. It has no SMS. Kit is the closest rival in audience terms — writers, podcasters and course creators — and it is ahead on inbox placement while costing more per month.
Brevo scored 8.3 and costs $25 at 5,000 contacts. It is priced by emails sent rather than contacts, includes transactional email, SMS and WhatsApp, and a CRM, with automation and landing pages on the Business plan. Its free plan allows 300 emails a day to unlimited contacts, and it reached 94 % inbox placement. Brevo is cheaper and includes SMS; beehiiv counters with the ad network and referral growth.
Klaviyo scored 8.3 at $100 and ActiveCampaign scored 8.1 at $79, both ahead of beehiiv on inbox placement at 96 % and 93 %. Klaviyo is built for online stores with native Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Magento data; ActiveCampaign has the deepest automation builder in the test and a CRM. Neither is aimed at publications.

Where beehiiv falls short
Deliverability is where it lost. Our test measured 92 % inbox placement, and Yahoo landed several campaigns in spam. That is the lowest figure among the platforms compared here. Automation is basic, limited to basic journeys on the Scale plan, so welcome, cart-abandon and re-engagement flows do not go as far as the rivals above. And the platform is not built for businesses that are not publications — a store or a B2B sales team will find the growth tools irrelevant and the ecommerce data thin.
Price and value
beehiiv costs $39 per month at 5,000 contacts. The free plan covers 2,500 subscribers, which is the most generous free contact allowance in this comparison apart from Kit's 10,000-subscriber Newsletter plan and Brevo's unlimited contacts at 300 emails a day. Value scored 17 of 20. The price matches MailerLite exactly, though MailerLite reached 97 % inbox placement in our test.
Who should buy beehiiv?
Buy it if you are a newsletter publisher focused on growth and ads. The referral programme, Boosts and the ad network are the reasons to choose it, and the included website and archive mean the publication can live on the platform. The free tier to 2,500 subscribers lets you test that fit before paying $39 at 5,000 contacts.
Look elsewhere if deliverability is your priority, if you need multi-step automation, or if your business is not a publication. MailerLite and Kit beat it on inbox placement, and Brevo costs less while including SMS.
