What separates the picks on this page?

Two plans sit at the top with a score of 8.5: Faye at $149 and Seven Corners at $168. Faye wins on speed — you file in the app and approved claims land in the Faye Wallet in days — and carries $250,000 medical with $500,000 evacuation. Seven Corners goes the other way on limits: $500,000 emergency medical and $1 million evacuation, the highest in the ranking, plus CFAR at 75% and a pre-existing waiver with a 20-day window.

Tin Leg scores 8.2 at $158, with $500,000 primary medical that pays before your health plan and a 75% CFAR option. Its evacuation limit is half Seven Corners'. Allianz scores 8.0 at $172 and is the annual-plan pick: AllTrips plans from about $150 cover a year of trips, and SmartBenefits pays fixed delay claims automatically from flight data.

Travel Guard and Travelex both score 7.9, at $164 and $139. Travel Guard has the widest add-on list — pets, weddings, adventure sports, rental cars — and AIG assistance in 200+ countries. Travelex is the family buy: kids 17 and under ride free on Travel Select with an insured adult. WorldTrips scores 7.8 at $156, with Atlas Travel medical-only plans from about a dollar a day for months abroad and a 21-day pre-existing window, the longest here.

What should you check before buying?

The scoring weights coverage 35, claims and service 25, price 20 and flexibility 20 — so read the medical and evacuation numbers on the tier you are actually buying, not the headline plan.

  • Medical limit: Allianz Prime is $50,000, Travel Guard Preferred is $50,000, Travelex is $50,000 and WorldTrips' mid plan is $150,000. Upgrades lift each of these.
  • Evacuation: $1 million on Seven Corners, Travel Guard Deluxe and WorldTrips Journey Preferred; $500,000 on Faye; half of Seven Corners' on Tin Leg.
  • Cancellation: CFAR is 75% at Seven Corners and Tin Leg, 50% at Travel Guard, and Allianz's "Cancel Anytime" is Premier-only.
  • Claims route: app and wallet at Faye, automatic delay payment at Allianz, web form and email at Travelex, paper-heavy at WorldTrips.
  • Eligibility and term: Faye is US residents only and has no annual plan; Tin Leg has no annual plan either.

Fast claims and app-first handling

Faye suits travelers who want to file and track in the app and get approved claims paid to a digital wallet.

Top medical and evacuation limits

Seven Corners fits trips where the medical and evacuation ceiling matters most, and Tin Leg covers the same ground with primary medical that pays before your health plan.

Several trips a year

Allianz is built for that, with AllTrips annual plans from about $150 and kids 17 and under free on OneTrip Prime.

Add-ons and family pricing

Travel Guard covers pets, weddings and adventure riders; Travelex covers kids 17 and under at no charge with an insured adult.

Long stays abroad

WorldTrips' Atlas Travel medical-only plans run from about a dollar a day for months away.

For fast, app-based claims, Faye at $149 is the pick; for the highest medical and evacuation limits, Seven Corners at $168. Allianz suits several trips a year with AllTrips annual plans, Travelex suits families with kids 17 and under covered free, and WorldTrips fits long stays abroad on medical-only plans.

Questions about budget travel

Do I need travel insurance?
For medical cover abroad, almost always: most US health plans, including Medicare, pay little or nothing outside the country, and an evacuation can cost $50,000 or more. Trip-cancellation cover is worth it when the non-refundable cost is more than you would shrug off.
What does "cancel for any reason" mean?
CFAR is an add-on that refunds typically 50–75% of the trip cost if you cancel for a reason the standard policy does not cover. It usually must be bought within 14–21 days of the first trip payment and costs about 40–50% more. It is not available in every state.
What is a pre-existing condition waiver?
Standard policies exclude conditions that were treated or changed in the 60–180 days before purchase. Buying within the insurer's window (usually 14–21 days after the first trip payment) and insuring the full trip cost waives that exclusion.
How do you rank travel insurance?
We read each plan's certificate of insurance, get a quote for the same sample trip, and check complaint ratios in NAIC data. Coverage is 35% of the score, claims and service 25%, price 20%, flexibility 20%. We are not licensed agents; verify with the insurer.
