Frequently asked questions about travel insurance

Do I need travel insurance?
For medical cover abroad, almost always: most US health plans, including Medicare, pay little or nothing outside the country, and an evacuation can cost $50,000 or more. Trip-cancellation cover is worth it when the non-refundable cost is more than you would shrug off.
What does "cancel for any reason" mean?
CFAR is an add-on that refunds typically 50–75% of the trip cost if you cancel for a reason the standard policy does not cover. It usually must be bought within 14–21 days of the first trip payment and costs about 40–50% more. It is not available in every state.
What is a pre-existing condition waiver?
Standard policies exclude conditions that were treated or changed in the 60–180 days before purchase. Buying within the insurer's window (usually 14–21 days after the first trip payment) and insuring the full trip cost waives that exclusion.
How do you rank travel insurance?
We read each plan's certificate of insurance, get a quote for the same sample trip, and check complaint ratios in NAIC data. Coverage is 35% of the score, claims and service 25%, price 20%, flexibility 20%. We are not licensed agents; verify with the insurer.
