Is the Wyzant Worth It?

Best online tutoring. A good tutor beat every app on our questions, and Wyzant makes finding one easy. It is the expensive option and it does nothing between lessons, which is why it sits behind Khan and Chegg overall.

Wyzant Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Tutors explained our calculus and chemistry mistakes better than any written answer
  • Only service that gave useful, specific essay feedback
  • Choose by subject, price, rating and availability; first-hour guarantee
  • Online whiteboard and video built in
Cons
  • Pay per hour; an hour a week costs more than any subscription
  • Quality depends on the tutor you choose
  • No self-study tools

What problem does Wyzant solve, and who is it for?

Wyzant solves the problem of being stuck on a specific question and having nobody to ask. It is a marketplace for one-to-one tutors in 300+ subjects, and it is the only service in our test where our essay questions got real feedback. A good tutor beat every app on our questions, and Wyzant makes finding one easy. That is the whole benefit: a person who sees your actual work and explains your mistake in the moment.

It is not a study platform. It does nothing between lessons, which is why it sits behind Khan and Chegg overall. It is for students who are stuck and need a person, not for students who want practice material to work through alone.

How did Wyzant score in our test?

Wyzant finished with 8 out of 10 overall, third of the eight services we tested. The score comes from five weighted criteria.

  • Answer quality: 28/30. Two teachers graded our 30 test questions blind for correctness and explanation. Tutors explained our calculus and chemistry mistakes better than any written answer.
  • Coverage: 22/20. We measured subjects, textbook editions, grade levels and how often our questions already had an answer. Wyzant covers 300+ subjects across K–12, college, test prep and adult learners.
  • Study tools: 12/20. Flashcards, practice tests, step-by-step solvers, writing feedback and tutoring access. Wyzant has the tutoring and the writing feedback, and nothing else.
  • Learning & integrity: 10/10. We checked whether the tool teaches the method rather than handing over the answer, plus honour-code policies. A tutor who explains your error scores as well as anything can here.
  • Value: 8/20. Monthly price and what the free tier gives. There is no free tier, and tutors set their own hourly rates.

What does Wyzant do better than the alternatives?

The measured teacher grade was 94/100, the second-highest in our test. Two things drove it. First, tutors explained our calculus and chemistry mistakes better than any written answer we collected. Second, Wyzant was the only service that gave useful, specific essay feedback — the apps either refused or returned generic notes.

Finding a tutor is also unusually practical. You choose by subject, price, rating and availability, and there is a first-hour guarantee. The online whiteboard and video are built in, so a session does not depend on a third-party call tool.

What do you actually get, and what does it cost?

The components are simple, because the product is the lesson.

  • Price: tutors set hourly rates, typically $35–$80; no subscription.
  • Free tier: no.
  • Levels: K–12, college, test prep, adult.
  • Subjects: 300+.
  • Live tutors: yes — the whole product.
  • Textbook solutions: no.
  • AI assistant: no.
  • Apps: iOS, Android and web.

At one hour a week, our measured cost was $140/mo. That buys live human help and nothing else.

How does Wyzant compare with the other services we tested?

Khan Academy scored 8.8 and is free, with Khanmigo at $4/mo. It covers K–12, early college and SAT/MCAT/LSAT across math, science, economics, humanities and computing, with a Socratic AI tutor that guides rather than answers. Wyzant beats it on live human explanation and essay feedback; Khan beats it on price, coverage breadth and self-study tools.

Quizlet scored 8.2 at $7.99/mo, with a free ad-supported tier, 500 million study sets, Learn mode, practice tests, textbook solutions on Plus and Magic Notes and Q-Chat as AI. Wyzant is ahead on answer quality and live tutoring; Quizlet is ahead on price and on everything you can do without a tutor.

Chegg Study scored 7.9 at $15.95/mo, with step-by-step solutions for 9,000+ textbooks, expert Q&A and an AI assistant with expert verification. Wyzant is ahead on live explanation and essay feedback; Chegg is ahead on textbook solutions and monthly cost.

Photomath scored 7.7 and is free, with Plus at $9.99/mo for animated tutorials and textbook solutions. It is math only, from arithmetic to calculus. Wyzant is ahead on subject range and human feedback; Photomath is ahead on price and on step-by-step math explanations.

Course Hero scored 7.1 at $9.95/mo billed yearly, or $39.95 monthly, with student-uploaded notes, textbook solutions, expert Q&A and AI. Wyzant is ahead on answer quality; Course Hero is ahead on price and on library material.

Where does Wyzant fall short?

Value and self-study tools are the two places it lost. There is no free tier, and paying per hour means an hour a week costs more than any subscription in our test. The measured Value score was 8/20.

Quality also depends on the tutor you choose. Two teachers graded our questions blind, and the spread between tutors was wider than the spread between apps. And there is nothing to use between lessons: no flashcards, no practice tests, no step-by-step solver, no textbook solutions and no AI assistant.

Is Wyzant worth the price?

From about $35/hr, with tutors setting their own rates, typically $35–$80. There is no subscription and no free tier. At one hour a week our measured cost was $140/mo, against a Value score of 8/20. If you measure value per dollar, Wyzant is the most expensive way to get homework help in this test. If you measure value per fixed mistake, a single session that clears a topic you have been stuck on for a week is the cheapest thing here.

Who should buy Wyzant?

Students who are stuck and need a person. That is the case it was built for and the case it wins: a specific question, a real mistake in your own work, and a tutor who can see it and explain it. If you want material to work through on your own, or you want to spend less than a tutor costs, Khan Academy, Quizlet or Chegg Study will serve you better.
