What problem does Chegg Study solve, and who is it for?

Chegg Study is built for one job: getting you an answer when you are stuck on a textbook problem. In our test it had the answer to nearly every textbook problem we tried, and it explained most of them well. That is why it took the Best for textbook solutions label in this category, where it ranked 4th of 8 tested services with a score of 7.9.

The people it suits are college students checking problem sets. Used that way, after you have done your own working, it is the most useful paid tool here. The verdict is blunt about the catch: it scored lowest on integrity because it makes copying easy. The strengths that back the recommendation are concrete. We got worked solutions for the exact problems in our calculus and chemistry textbooks. Expert answers to our own questions came back within hours, mostly correct. The Pack adds a citation tool, a plagiarism checker and a math solver, and you can cancel any time.

How did Chegg Study score across our five criteria?

We grade every service on the same five criteria, and the points below are the real totals out of the real maximum.

  • Answer quality: 26/30. This measures correctness and explanation of our 30 test questions, graded blind by two teachers. Chegg's teacher grade came out at 84/100.
  • Coverage: 20/20. This covers subjects, textbook editions, grade levels and how often our questions already had an answer. Chegg took full marks here.
  • Study tools: 16/20. This covers flashcards, practice tests, step-by-step solvers, writing feedback and tutoring access.
  • Learning & integrity: 5/10. This measures whether the tool teaches the method rather than hands over the answer, and its honour-code policies. This is where Chegg lost the review.
  • Value: 12/20. This measures the monthly price and what the free tier gives.

Add those up and you get 7.9, the fourth-best score in a category of eight.

What does Chegg Study do best?

The standout is textbook coverage. Chegg lists step-by-step solutions for 9,000+ titles, and in practice that meant worked solutions for the exact problems in our calculus and chemistry textbooks. When a question was not already answered, the expert Q&A filled the gap: answers to our own questions came back within hours and were mostly correct.

The Pack is the second strength. A citation tool, a plagiarism checker and a math solver sit alongside the core solution library, so one subscription covers more than answer lookup. The AI assistant is paired with expert verification rather than left to run alone. And there is no lock-in: you can cancel any time.

How does Chegg Study compare with the other services we tested?

Khan Academy scored 8.8 and is free, with Khanmigo at $4/mo. It covers K–12, early college and SAT/MCAT/LSAT across math, science, economics, humanities and computing, with an AI tutor that guides rather than answers. It has no textbook solutions and no live tutors. Chegg beats it on textbook solutions and expert Q&A; Khan Academy beats Chegg on score, price and integrity.

Quizlet scored 8.2 at $7.99/mo, or $35.99/yr, with a free ad-supported tier. It has textbook solutions on Plus, Magic Notes and Q-Chat, and 500 million study sets, but no live tutors. Chegg is ahead on expert answers and textbook depth; Quizlet is ahead on score and price.

It is college-level, covers most college subjects, and offers textbook solutions, an AI assistant and expert Q&A. Chegg scores higher and covers high school as well; Course Hero is cheaper on the annual plan.

For reference, Wyzant scored 8.0 from about $35/hr with real one-to-one tutors in 300+ subjects, and Photomath scored 7.7, free with Plus at $9.99/mo, for math only.

Where does Chegg Study fall short?

Integrity is the headline failure. Chegg scored 5/10 on learning and integrity, the lowest of the eight services we tested, because it puts answers first and explanation second. Our testers noted that universities pursue misuse and that Chegg cooperates with investigations. That combination is why the verdict says to use it to check your own working after you have done it, not before.

The other two weaknesses are about consistency. Expert answers vary in quality, so a question that has no textbook solution can come back weaker than the library content. And the free tier is limited, so most of the value sits behind the subscription.

Is Chegg Study good value?

Chegg Study costs $15.95/mo, with the Study Pack at $19.95/mo. On our Value criterion it scored 12/20, which measures the monthly price and what the free tier gives. The free tier is limited, so the paid plan is where the textbook solutions, expert Q&A and Pack tools live. Against the field, it is more expensive than Quizlet at $7.99/mo and Course Hero at $9.95/mo billed yearly, and cheaper than Wyzant's typical $35–$80 hourly tutoring. Khan Academy is free. The value case rests on how often your own textbooks are in the 9,000+ title library.

Who should buy Chegg Study?

College students checking problem sets. If your courses run on standard textbooks and you want to verify your working after you have attempted it, Chegg had the answer to nearly every textbook problem we tried and explained most of them well. If you need a tool that teaches the method from the start, or you want live human tutoring, the integrity score and the lack of live tutors point elsewhere in this category.
