What separates the best SEO tools for small business on this page?

Price is the first split. Ubersuggest starts at $29 and Moz Pro at $49. Semrush runs $139.95 for one seat, with extra seats $45. SE Ranking sits at $119 but includes three seats and 2,000 tracked keywords. Google Search Console costs nothing.

Backlink data is the second split. Against the same 200 known links, SE Ranking found 132, Semrush 171, Moz Pro 148 and Ubersuggest 89. Google Search Console reports a sample, not an index. If link building is your main job, that gap matters.

Keyword limits are the third. Moz Pro's starter tracks 50 keywords, Ubersuggest 125, SE Ranking 2,000. Semrush tracked Google Ads volumes most closely on head terms in testing.

What should you check before buying an SEO tool?

Our scoring puts index size and data accuracy at 30, feature coverage at 25, value at 20, usability and reporting at 15, and limits and fair use at 10. Check those against your own workload.

  • Seats and keyword limits. One seat at $139.95 is fine solo; a team needs the seat math.
  • Backlink coverage. The tools here found between 89 and 171 of 200 links.
  • Reporting. SE Ranking includes white-label reports and client logins.
  • Learning curve. Moz Pro writes explanations for people still learning; Ubersuggest needs no training.
  • Local work. Moz Local manages directory listings; Semrush sells local listings as an add-on.

SE Ranking

Best for agencies and small teams that need client reporting. Three seats, 2,000 keywords and white-label reports at $119. Rank tracking was the most accurate against manual checks. Backlink coverage is the weak point at 132 of 200.

Google Search Console

Best for anyone who wants Google's own impressions, clicks and average position, plus indexing reports and Core Web Vitals from real user data. No competitor data.

Semrush

Best for businesses running SEO, paid search, social and PR together. The widest toolkit here, at $139.95 for one seat.

Moz Pro

Best for someone learning SEO. $49 entry plan, Domain Authority, Moz Local, and explanations written for beginners. Starter tracks 50 keywords.

Ubersuggest

Best for a single small site on a tight budget. $29 a month or a one-off lifetime licence, 125 keywords, and simple enough to use without training.

For a team that bills clients, SE Ranking gives you three seats, 2,000 keywords and white-label reports at $119. If you run SEO alongside paid and social, Semrush covers the most ground. Solo owners on a tight budget should start with Ubersuggest at $29, or Moz Pro at $49 if you are still learning, and pair either with the free Google Search Console data.

Questions about best seo tools for small business

Do I need a paid SEO tool?
Not to start. Google Search Console shows the queries you already rank for, which is the single most useful data set, and it is free. A paid tool earns its keep when you need to see competitors' keywords and backlinks, track hundreds of positions, or audit a large site. Below about 50 pages, Search Console plus a free tier usually covers it.
Which tool finds the most backlinks?
Ahrefs found 186 of our 200 known links, Semrush 171 and Moz 148. Index size is the one area where the two market leaders are genuinely ahead, and it is why link-building teams pay their prices.
Are keyword volumes accurate?
They are estimates, and they differ between tools by a wide margin for the same term. Against Google Ads figures, Semrush and Ahrefs were closest on high-volume head terms; every tool struggled on long-tail queries under about 100 searches a month. Use them to compare terms with each other, not as a forecast of traffic.
How do you test SEO tools?
The same five sites are added to every tool, along with a list of 200 backlinks we already know exist. We record how many each finds, compare 50 keyword volumes with Google Ads Keyword Planner, run the site audit and check the issues it reports against a manual review, and price the plan needed to track 500 keywords across five projects.
