Which SEO Tools You Actually Need (and When Free Is Enough)
A stack by site size, and the point at which a $129 subscription starts paying for itself.
Under 50 pages, one site
Google Search Console plus Screaming Frog's free 500-URL crawl covers everything you can act on. Add Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, which is free for sites you verify, to see your own backlinks. Cost: nothing.
A growing site with competitors
You now need data about pages that are not yours. This is the point where a paid tool earns its money. Ubersuggest at $29 or Moz Starter at $49 will answer basic questions; Ahrefs Lite or Semrush Pro will answer them properly.
An agency or consultant
Seats, client reports and rank tracking matter more than index size. SE Ranking gives three seats and 2,000 keywords for $119; Ahrefs charges $129 for one seat and 750. Many agencies run SE Ranking for reporting and one Ahrefs seat for research.
A technical migration
Screaming Frog, every time, whatever else you own. A licence is $259 a year and it will find redirect chains and orphaned pages no cloud audit reported.
What to ignore
Domain Authority, Domain Rating and every other third-party score. They are the tool vendor's estimate, not a Google signal, and optimising for them wastes time.
