Frequently asked questions about pillows

How high should my pillow be?
Under the weight of your head, not on the shelf. Side sleepers need about 4–6 inches of compressed loft to fill the shoulder gap; back sleepers 3–5; stomach sleepers under 3 or none. Adjustable pillows (Coop, Layla) let you find it; our measurements show the compressed loft of every pillow.
Memory foam or down?
Solid memory foam holds a shape and supports the neck best (Tempur-Cloud, Purple Harmony's latex core); shredded foam adjusts; down and down-alternative feel softer and squash flatter. Hot sleepers should avoid solid foam without a cooling design.
How often should I replace a pillow?
When it no longer springs back after folding — typically 1–2 years for down and polyester, 2–3 for shredded foam, 3–4 for solid foam and latex. Every pillow here lost less than half an inch of loft in our trial.
How do you test pillows?
A side sleeper and a back sleeper each spend seven nights on every pillow and rate comfort and heat. We measure loft under a 10 lb weight, surface temperature after 20 minutes under a heated pad, and loft after the trial. Price is list for a standard or queen size.
