What separates the best pillows for stomach sleepers on this page?

Three pillows, three different answers. The Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Pillow scores 8.1 at $89, the Brooklinen Down Pillow scores 8.0 at $69, and the Beckham Hotel Collection Pillows (2-pack) scores 7.4 at $40.

The Tempur-Pedic earned its score on support and alignment. Testers kept a back sleeper's neck on the laser line all week, and the dense TEMPUR foam should outlast shredded and down fills. It also compresses for travel. The trade-offs: it ran the warmest in the test, and it sat too low for a side sleeper.

The Brooklinen is the feel pick. Both testers rated it the most luxurious, it comes in three firmnesses, and it carries a 365-day trial. It is machine washable. But it compressed to 2.8 inches under load, the flattest here, and it needs daily fluffing.

The Beckham is the price pick at $20 a pillow. It is machine washable and soft enough for stomach sleepers. It also compressed to 2.5 inches, so it gives no support for side sleepers, and it lost the most loft of any pillow in one week.

What should you check before buying a pillow for stomach sleeping?

Our scoring puts 30 points on support and alignment, 20 on comfort, 15 on cooling, 15 on materials and durability, and 20 on value. Read your own priorities against those weights.

  • Height under load. The Brooklinen hit 2.8 inches and the Beckham 2.5 inches when compressed. A stomach sleeper wants a low profile, but a side sleeper in the same bed needs more.
  • Heat. The Tempur-Pedic was the warmest pillow in the test. If you run hot, weigh that against its alignment score.
  • Upkeep. Down needs daily fluffing. Foam does not. The Beckham and Brooklinen are both machine washable.
  • How long it holds loft. The Beckham lost the most loft of any pillow in one week. The Tempur-Pedic's dense foam is built to outlast shredded and down fills.
  • Price per pillow. $89 for the Tempur-Pedic, $69 for the Brooklinen, $40 for two Beckham pillows.

Questions about best pillows for stomach sleepers

How high should my pillow be?
Under the weight of your head, not on the shelf. Side sleepers need about 4–6 inches of compressed loft to fill the shoulder gap; back sleepers 3–5; stomach sleepers under 3 or none. Adjustable pillows (Coop, Layla) let you find it; our measurements show the compressed loft of every pillow.
Memory foam or down?
Solid memory foam holds a shape and supports the neck best (Tempur-Cloud, Purple Harmony's latex core); shredded foam adjusts; down and down-alternative feel softer and squash flatter. Hot sleepers should avoid solid foam without a cooling design.
How often should I replace a pillow?
When it no longer springs back after folding — typically 1–2 years for down and polyester, 2–3 for shredded foam, 3–4 for solid foam and latex. Every pillow here lost less than half an inch of loft in our trial.
How do you test pillows?
A side sleeper and a back sleeper each spend seven nights on every pillow and rate comfort and heat. We measure loft under a 10 lb weight, surface temperature after 20 minutes under a heated pad, and loft after the trial. Price is list for a standard or queen size.
