What separates the best free job search sites?

All seven are free to use, so the split comes down to listing quality and what each site does with your profile. LinkedIn Jobs leads at 8.6, with 89% of first-page listings verified real and current. Indeed scores 8.2 and returns the most results for every search, but only 71% of its first-page listings verified real and current — the lowest here. ZipRecruiter and Glassdoor both sit at 8.1. ZipRecruiter's matcher pushed relevant small-business and hourly jobs before we searched; Glassdoor attaches employee reviews, salaries and interview questions to the same listings Indeed carries. Wellfound (7.7) shows salary and equity on every listing. We Work Remotely (7.2) is remote-only and 94% of its listings verified real and current, but it returned 60 relevant results across our three searches. Remote.co (7.0) is the smallest remote pool.

What should I check before I start applying?

Scoring weighted listing quality at 30, search and filters at 20, seeker tools at 20, coverage at 15 and value at 15. That order matches what you'll hit in the first hour.

  • Listing freshness. The gap between 94% and 71% verified real and current is the difference between a shortlist and a pile of expired posts.
  • Duplicates. Indeed's aggregator and staffing-agency repeats waste time; We Work Remotely hand-posts and has almost no junk.
  • Apply friction. LinkedIn's Easy Apply, ZipRecruiter's 1-Tap Apply and Wellfound's one-profile-many-applications all cut form-filling.
  • Research layer. Glassdoor bundles reviews, salaries, benefits and interview questions; Indeed shows company reviews and salary data on the listing.
  • Role fit. LinkedIn is weak for hourly and trade jobs; Wellfound is startups only; We Work Remotely and Remote.co have almost no healthcare or hourly work.
  • Notifications. ZipRecruiter's volume is high by default — trim it before your inbox fills.

Professional and corporate roles

LinkedIn Jobs, 8.6, free with Premium at $39.99/mo. Alerts matched our searches best, and recruiters search the profile you already have. Premium adds little for most seekers.

Volume, nursing and hourly work

Indeed, 8.2 and free, for the most listings per search plus a free resume builder. ZipRecruiter, 8.1 and free, suits small and mid-size employers who post directly and want one-click applying.

Researching before you apply

Glassdoor, 8.1 and free, if you want reviews, salaries and interview questions next to the listing. It needs an account and a contribution to see everything.

Startups and remote-only

Wellfound, 7.7 and free, for salary and equity on every listing and founders replying directly. We Work Remotely, 7.2 and free, for a small, clean remote-only board with no account needed. Remote.co, 7.0 and free, for screened FlexJobs listings and company profiles on remote work.

For professional roles, LinkedIn Jobs at 8.6 is the pick, and Indeed at 8.2 covers nursing and hourly work with the most listings. Glassdoor at 8.1 suits anyone who wants reviews and salary data before applying, while Wellfound at 7.7 fits startup searches with equity shown. If you only want remote roles, We Work Remotely at 7.2 and Remote.co at 7.0 keep the pool small and clean.

Questions about best free job search sites

Why would anyone pay for a job board?
Because the free ones are full of stale, duplicate and fake remote listings. FlexJobs charges because every listing is checked by a person before it appears; in our four weeks 98% of its first-page results were real and current against 71% on the biggest free site. Whether that is worth $25 a month depends on how many hours you spend filtering.
Which site has the most jobs?
Indeed, by a wide margin, followed by LinkedIn. Volume is not the same as relevance: Indeed returned the most results for all three searches and the most duplicates and expired postings.
How do I spot a fake job listing?
No company name or a generic one, a salary far above market, an interview by chat only, a request for personal data or payment, and an email domain that is not the employer's. Cross-check every listing on the employer's careers page — that is what we did for this ranking.
How do you test job sites?
Three searches, weekly for four weeks, on every site. For each first page we check whether the job exists on the employer's site, whether it is still open, and whether it duplicates another listing. We also set alerts, build a profile, apply to a test posting and use the salary and company tools.
