How to Spot a Fake Job Listing (We Checked 2,000 of Them)

The seven signs from the listings we verified, which sites had the most, and what to do before you send a resume.

Across four weeks and eight sites we checked every first-page listing against the employer's own careers page. Between 2% (FlexJobs) and 29% (Indeed) of listings were stale, duplicated or could not be verified. A smaller number were outright scams, almost all of them "remote".

Seven signs

  1. No company name, or a name with no web presence.
  2. Pay well above the market for the title.
  3. Interview by text or chat app only.
  4. A request for personal documents, bank details or a fee before hiring.
  5. An email address that is not the employer's domain.
  6. The same listing under several company names.
  7. "Urgent" or "immediate start" for a professional role.

Before you apply

Find the role on the employer's careers page and apply there when you can. Search the company name plus "scam". Never pay anything, and never share ID documents before an offer letter from a verified domain.
