What separates the best robot vacuum for pet hair on this page?

Two robots sit at the top. The Roborock Qrevo Curv scored 8.5 and recovered 94% of debris in testing, the highest here. The Dreame L40 Ultra scored 8.4 and recovered 92%, with mop pads that detach at the dock so a carpet-only run leaves no damp edges. Both avoided every obstacle in the test.

Below them, price changes the picture. The Roborock Q7 Max+ and the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ both scored 7.8, and the Shark AI Ultra Self-Empty scored 7.3. The Q7 Max+ costs $599.99 and recovered 88% of debris, but it has no obstacle avoidance — it ate the cable and drove through the mess. The Roomba Combo j9+ costs $1,399.99 and its mop pad rides on top across carpet, so there were zero damp edges; its dock does not wash the pad, though. The Shark costs $599.99, recovered 89% on medium carpet, and its self-cleaning brushroll shed no hair in two weeks, but it has no mop and detected the sock but not the cable or the mess.

What should you check before buying a robot vacuum for pet hair?

Cleaning performance carries the most weight in our scoring at 30 points, and navigation and obstacles is next at 25. That order matters with pets: hair on carpet is one problem, and a cable or an accident on the floor is another.

  • Obstacle handling: the Qrevo Curv, L40 Ultra and Roomba Combo j9+ avoided the cable, sock and mess. The Q7 Max+ and Shark did not.
  • Mop design: the L40 Ultra leaves its pads at the dock; the Roomba Combo j9+ lifts its pad onto the robot's back. The Q7 Max+ only dampens with a flat pad, and the Shark has no mop.
  • Dock upkeep: the Qrevo Curv washes and dries its mops with hot water but needs a water refill or a plumbing kit, and its dock is large. The Q7 Max+ auto-empty dock holds seven weeks. The Shark base is bagless with a 60-day bin.
  • Thresholds and layout: the Qrevo Curv climbs thresholds up to 4 cm. The Roomba Combo j9+ uses camera navigation that needs light and maps more slowly.

Which one for whom?

If carpet and hardwood both get pet hair and you want the highest debris recovery here, the Roborock Qrevo Curv at $1,599.99 is the pick. Want most of that for less? The Dreame L40 Ultra at $1,499.99 handles edge mopping and carpet runs without damp edges, though its suction rating is lower and the app is busier.

On a $599.99 budget, choose by floor. The Roborock Q7 Max+ suits carpet-heavy homes that can keep cables off the floor, with LiDAR mapping and room and no-go editing. The Shark AI Ultra Self-Empty suits vacuum-only homes that want a bagless base and a tangle-free brush. The iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ at $1,399.99 suits mixed floors where the mop must never touch carpet, and its dual rubber rollers cleared pet hair without tangling.

For the most debris recovered in our tests, the Roborock Qrevo Curv is the one to buy. The Dreame L40 Ultra gets you close for less, and the iRobot Roomba Combo j9+ is the pick for mixed floors where the mop must stay off carpet. If you want to spend $599.99, the Roborock Q7 Max+ suits carpet-heavy homes and the Shark AI Ultra Self-Empty suits vacuum-only homes.

Questions about best robot vacuums for pet hair

Do robot vacuums actually work on carpet?
On low and medium pile, yes: the Roborock, Dreame and Roomba j-series robots recovered 85–92% of embedded sand from medium carpet in our test. Thick or shag carpet defeats every robot here, and mopping robots lift their pads on carpet but still leave a damp edge at the transition.
Is a self-emptying dock worth it?
It is the feature that makes a robot vacuum genuinely hands-off: the base sucks the bin into a bag that lasts one to two months. Docks that also wash and dry the mop pads (Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs) take the last chore away. Budget the $150–$300 it adds if you want to forget the robot exists.
Will it run over the dog's accident?
Robots with a front camera and AI obstacle recognition (Roborock, Dreame, Roomba j9+, Ecovacs) avoided our fake mess every time; the budget Eufy and Shark models drove through it. If you have a pet that has accidents, obstacle avoidance is not optional.
How do you test robot vacuums?
Same 900 sq ft floor with hardwood, low and medium carpet and a rug. We spread 50 g each of rice, fine sand and pet hair, weigh the bin after a full run, and repeat three times. We place a USB cable, a sock and a simulated pet mess and log avoidance, map accuracy and missed areas, measure noise at 1 m, and run each robot daily for two weeks to test the dock.
