What separates the best robot vacuum for hardwood floors?

Six robots ran the same floor for two weeks with weighed debris. The Roborock Qrevo Curv scored 8.5 and recovered 94% of debris, the highest here. The Dreame L40 Ultra scored 8.4 with 92% recovery and mop pads that detach at the dock, so a carpet-only run leaves no damp edges. Both avoided every obstacle in the test.

Below them, the eufy X10 Pro Omni and Ecovacs Deebot T30S Combo both scored 8. The eufy costs $799.99 and brings a full wash-dry-empty dock at that price, but its 86% pickup left sand in medium carpet and it was the loudest robot tested. The Ecovacs costs $1,199.99 and its dock also charges a cordless stick vacuum for stairs.

The Roborock Q7 Max+ scored 7.8 at $599.99 with 88% debris recovery and a LiDAR map you can edit by room. It has no obstacle avoidance, so it ate the cable and drove through the mess. The eufy RoboVac 11S MAX scored 5.8 at $249.99: 82% recovery on hardwood, 55 dB, and slim enough to clean under every piece of furniture, but random navigation missed 15% of the floor and took 90 minutes.

What should you check before buying?

Scoring weights cleaning performance at 30 and navigation and obstacles at 25, so those two decide most of the ranking. Value is 20, dock and maintenance 15, app and noise 10.

Obstacle handling: the Qrevo Curv, L40 Ultra and T30S Combo avoided all three obstacles. The Q7 Max+ has none.

Questions about best robot vacuums for hardwood floors

Do robot vacuums actually work on carpet?

On low and medium pile, yes: the Roborock, Dreame and Roomba j-series robots recovered 85–92% of embedded sand from medium carpet in our test. Thick or shag carpet defeats every robot here, and mopping robots lift their pads on carpet but still leave a damp edge at the transition.

Is a self-emptying dock worth it?

It is the feature that makes a robot vacuum genuinely hands-off: the base sucks the bin into a bag that lasts one to two months. Docks that also wash and dry the mop pads (Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs) take the last chore away. Budget the $150–$300 it adds if you want to forget the robot exists.

Will it run over the dog's accident?

Robots with a front camera and AI obstacle recognition (Roborock, Dreame, Roomba j9+, Ecovacs) avoided our fake mess every time; the budget Eufy and Shark models drove through it. If you have a pet that has accidents, obstacle avoidance is not optional.

How do you test robot vacuums?

Same 900 sq ft floor with hardwood, low and medium carpet and a rug. We spread 50 g each of rice, fine sand and pet hair, weigh the bin after a full run, and repeat three times. We place a USB cable, a sock and a simulated pet mess and log avoidance, map accuracy and missed areas, measure noise at 1 m, and run each robot daily for two weeks to test the dock.
