Frequently asked questions about robot vacuums

Do robot vacuums actually work on carpet?
On low and medium pile, yes: the Roborock, Dreame and Roomba j-series robots recovered 85–92% of embedded sand from medium carpet in our test. Thick or shag carpet defeats every robot here, and mopping robots lift their pads on carpet but still leave a damp edge at the transition.
Is a self-emptying dock worth it?
It is the feature that makes a robot vacuum genuinely hands-off: the base sucks the bin into a bag that lasts one to two months. Docks that also wash and dry the mop pads (Roborock, Dreame, Ecovacs) take the last chore away. Budget the $150–$300 it adds if you want to forget the robot exists.
Will it run over the dog's accident?
Robots with a front camera and AI obstacle recognition (Roborock, Dreame, Roomba j9+, Ecovacs) avoided our fake mess every time; the budget Eufy and Shark models drove through it. If you have a pet that has accidents, obstacle avoidance is not optional.
How do you test robot vacuums?
Same 900 sq ft floor with hardwood, low and medium carpet and a rug. We spread 50 g each of rice, fine sand and pet hair, weigh the bin after a full run, and repeat three times. We place a USB cable, a sock and a simulated pet mess and log avoidance, map accuracy and missed areas, measure noise at 1 m, and run each robot daily for two weeks to test the dock.
