Frequently asked questions about kids' backpacks
What size backpack does my child need?
Preschool and kindergarten: 8–12 litres, big enough for a folder and a lunch box. Grades 1–5: 15–20 litres. Middle school with binders and a laptop: 22–28 litres. The pack should not be wider than the child's torso or hang below the waist.
How heavy should a school backpack be?
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests no more than 10–20% of body weight. For a 60 lb second-grader that is 6–12 lb, which is why we tested with an 8 lb load. Padded straps, a chest strap and packing heavy items closest to the back all help.
Are lifetime warranties real?
JanSport and L.L.Bean honoured ours: JanSport repaired a zip in three weeks, L.L.Bean replaced a pack with a failed seam. Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee has the same reputation. Read the terms — normal wear is excluded, and JanSport's covers defects, not a puppy.
How do you test kids' backpacks?
Two children carry each pack for two school weeks with the same 8 lb load and rate comfort daily. We then rub the base 500 times on concrete, cycle every zip 500 times, and run a ten-minute shower over the closed pack with paper inside. Capacity is measured with beads.
