The weight rule

No more than 10–20% of body weight, per the American Academy of Pediatrics. Weigh the loaded pack at the start of term; most are over.

Three fit checks

  1. The pack sits between the shoulders and the waist — not below the hips.
  2. Both straps on, tightened so the pack does not sway; chest strap clipped if there is one.
  3. Heaviest items closest to the back.

By age, from our test

  • 4–7: Osprey Daylite Jr (10 L, chest strap).
  • 6–11: L.L.Bean Original Book Pack, Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie, Lands' End ClassMate Medium.
  • 9 and up: JanSport SuperBreak, Lands' End ClassMate Large, Fjällräven Kånken for light loads.
