What separates the best backpacks for elementary school?

Seven packs made this page, and the scores run from 8.9 down to 7.1. The gap is mostly durability and comfort, which carry 30 and 25 points in our scoring.

The L.L.Bean Original Book Pack scores 8.9 at $39.95. Its base showed no wear after the abrasion test, zips ran smoothly after 500 cycles, and paper stayed dry through the shower. Both children rated its strap padding highest. It has no chest strap, and it sells direct rather than on Amazon.

Lands' End ClassMate and Osprey Daylite Jr both score 8.5. The ClassMate costs $49.95 and comes in three sizes, with an organiser pocket, laptop sleeve, two bottle pockets and reflective trim. Its zips felt gritty after 500 cycles. The Daylite Jr costs $50 and was the best-fitting pack on the 7-year-old thanks to the chest strap and mesh back, but 10 L holds a folder and lunch box, not binders, and there is no reflective trim.

Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie and JanSport SuperBreak score 8.3. The Mackenzie costs $69.50, has a padded base and structured body that showed the least distortion after the abrasion rub, and comes with free name embroidery plus a matching lunch bag and bottle. It weighs 19 oz empty. The SuperBreak is $40, light at 12 oz, holds 25 L, and JanSport repaired a test zip in three weeks under its lifetime warranty. Its straps are thin, and the 11-year-old noticed the 8 lb load.

Herschel Heritage Youth scores 7.4 at $50, with a padded sleeve that fits a 13" laptop or tablet. It had the wettest interior after the shower test and no chest strap. The Fjällräven Kånken scores 7.1 at $80. Its Vinylon F fabric swells when wet, giving the driest interior in the shower test, and the base and corners were unmarked after abrasion. The straps are thin and unpadded, and it scored worst on comfort with 8 lb.

What should you check before buying?

Match the pack to the load your child actually carries. A 10 L pack suits a folder and lunch box; 25 L holds middle-school binders.

  • Durability: look for a base that survives abrasion and zips that still run after 500 cycles.
  • Comfort and fit: padded straps and a chest strap matter once the load reaches 8 lb.
  • Organisation: bottle pockets, a key clip and an organiser pocket keep small items findable.
  • Warranty: L.L.Bean offers a one-year no-questions guarantee, Lands' End an unconditional guarantee, Osprey an All Mighty Guarantee, JanSport a lifetime warranty, and Herschel a limited lifetime warranty.
  • Value: prices here run from $39.95 to $80.

Which one for whom?

For a child who needs one pack to last, the L.L.Bean Original Book Pack fits. If fit is the problem, the Osprey Daylite Jr was the best-fitting pack on the 7-year-old. For organisation and a matching set, the Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie or the Lands' End ClassMate. For a light, roomy pack on a budget, the JanSport SuperBreak. For a laptop or tablet, the Herschel Heritage Youth. For the driest interior in wet weather, the Fjällräven Kånken.

The L.L.Bean Original Book Pack suits a child who needs one pack to last, and the Osprey Daylite Jr suits a younger child where fit matters most. For organisation and a matching set, look at the Pottery Barn Kids Mackenzie or the Lands' End ClassMate. The JanSport SuperBreak covers a light, roomy pack on a budget, while the Fjällräven Kånken is the pick for wet weather.

Questions about best backpacks for elementary school

What size backpack does my child need?
Preschool and kindergarten: 8–12 litres, big enough for a folder and a lunch box. Grades 1–5: 15–20 litres. Middle school with binders and a laptop: 22–28 litres. The pack should not be wider than the child's torso or hang below the waist.
How heavy should a school backpack be?
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests no more than 10–20% of body weight. For a 60 lb second-grader that is 6–12 lb, which is why we tested with an 8 lb load. Padded straps, a chest strap and packing heavy items closest to the back all help.
Are lifetime warranties real?
JanSport and L.L.Bean honoured ours: JanSport repaired a zip in three weeks, L.L.Bean replaced a pack with a failed seam. Osprey's All Mighty Guarantee has the same reputation. Read the terms — normal wear is excluded, and JanSport's covers defects, not a puppy.
How do you test kids' backpacks?
Two children carry each pack for two school weeks with the same 8 lb load and rate comfort daily. We then rub the base 500 times on concrete, cycle every zip 500 times, and run a ten-minute shower over the closed pack with paper inside. Capacity is measured with beads.
