Frequently asked questions about home security systems

Is professional monitoring worth the monthly fee?
It is the difference between your phone buzzing and someone calling the police while you are asleep or abroad. In our test the monitoring centres called within 30 to 62 seconds of an alarm. If you will reliably see and act on a phone alert, self-monitoring with a system like Ring or Abode saves $20 to $60 a month. If nobody is watching the phone, pay for monitoring.
Do I still need a landline?
No. Every system here reports over broadband with a cellular radio as backup, and all seven kept reporting when we unplugged the router. Battery backup ran from 4 to 24 hours with the power cut.
What happens to the equipment if I cancel?
With SimpliSafe, Ring, Abode and Cove you bought the equipment and it is yours; most keeps working in self-monitored mode. ADT and Vivint sell long financed agreements where the equipment is tied to the contract, and leaving early means paying out the balance. Read that clause before the installer arrives.
How do you test home security systems?
The same eight-sensor layout goes into the same three-bedroom house: entry sensors on three doors, four window or motion sensors, and a keypad. We trigger the alarm ten times at different hours and log the seconds to the monitoring centre's call. We cut mains power and broadband separately, test the app and automations, and price equipment plus 36 months of monitoring.
