The catch is a 52-second median response, the slowest tested, and the Arlo Secure subscription for anything worthwhile.
Vivint (7.5) and ADT (7.2) both start at $599. Vivint's Outdoor Pro camera tells a lingering person from a passing car and speaks to them, and one hub runs locks, thermostat, garage and lighting. What should I check before buying?
Monitoring response carries the most weight in our scoring at 30 points, so decide how fast you need a call. Contract terms and value are 15 and 20 points, and that is where the expensive kits separate.
- Contract: Ring and SimpliSafe have none. ADT runs 36 months with early-termination liability of 75% of the remaining term. Vivint finances equipment over 42 to 60 months, and cancelling monitoring does not cancel that loan.
- Camera subscription: Ring camera recording needs its own tier, and Arlo's useful features sit behind Arlo Secure.
- Install: SimpliSafe took 50 minutes with no tools beyond the adhesive strips. Vivint and ADT send a professional.
