What problem does ADT solve for a large home?

ADT is the system for a house big enough that you would rather not install it yourself. A technician installs, tests and explains the whole system, so the eight-sensor layout is placed and verified by someone who does it daily. The monitoring side is the other half of the pitch: a 34-second median response from a network of redundant monitoring centres, measured across ten triggered alarms in our test, plus backup cellular and battery behaviour when we cut power and internet. ADT also backs the install with a theft protection guarantee of up to $500 of your insurance deductible, and Nest cameras and doorbells integrate properly. Where does ADT stand out?

The 34-second median response is the headline number, and it comes from a network of redundant monitoring centres rather than a single call centre. When we cut power and internet, the backup cellular and battery path kept the system reporting. The technician install, test and walkthrough is the second real strength: nothing is left for you to mount, pair or troubleshoot. The theft protection guarantee covers up to $500 of your insurance deductible, and Nest cameras and doorbells integrate properly rather than through a workaround.

How does the ADT monitoring network work?

Your sensors talk to the panel, and the panel talks to a monitoring centre over a cellular radio as well as your broadband line. If one path fails, the other carries the alarm. Redundant centres mean a second site can take the call if the first is busy or offline. A backup battery keeps the panel alive through a power cut. When an alarm trips, the centre calls you to confirm before dispatching police. That is the chain that produced our 34-second median.

What do you actually get, and what does it cost?

The starter kit is $599. Monitoring runs $49.99 a month, and the three-year total for the same eight-sensor layout is $2,399. Median response in our test was 34 seconds. There is no contract-free option: it is a 36-month term, with early-termination liability of 75% of the remaining term. DIY install is not offered, with the Self Setup line excepted. Cameras are Google Nest, and the smart-home side is the Google Nest ecosystem. There is no self-monitoring option.

How does ADT compare with the rivals we tested?

Ring Alarm scored 9.2 at $249, with monitoring at $19.99 a month and a three-year total of $969. Its median response was 41 seconds, it has no contract, DIY install, best-in-class cameras including a doorbell, Alexa-native smart home and free self-monitoring. ADT is faster on response and installs for you; Ring is cheaper, contract-free and you own the setup.

SimpliSafe scored 9.1 at $249, monitoring $21.99 a month, three-year total $1,071. Its median response was 30 seconds, with no contract, DIY install, indoor, outdoor and doorbell cameras, Alexa and Google support, and free self-monitoring. SimpliSafe beat ADT on response in our test and costs far less over three years.

Cove scored 8.6 at $229, monitoring $17.99 a month, three-year total $877. Median response was 36 seconds, with no contract, DIY install, basic indoor and doorbell cameras, Alexa and Google on the Plus plan, and no self-monitoring. ADT is quicker and professionally installed; Cove is the cheaper monitored route.

Where does ADT fall short?

The contract is the main problem. A 36-month term with early-termination liability of 75% of the remaining term is a real commitment, and it is why contract terms scored 6 out of 15. Cost is the second: $2,399 over three years is more than twice SimpliSafe. Pricing is also quoted on a sales call rather than published, so you cannot compare plans without talking to someone. Value scored 8 out of 20 for exactly these reasons.

Is ADT worth the price?

Whether it is worth it depends on how much you value not doing the install yourself and how much you trust the monitoring network.

Who should buy ADT?

Large homes and anyone who wants it installed for them. If you have a big layout, want a technician to place and test every sensor, and want Nest cameras and doorbells working inside the same system, ADT fits. If you want no contract, published pricing or a lower three-year cost, the rivals above are the better fit.
